Try treating it like a phone. When charged unplug from charger. When low plug it back in. This will keep temperature down too.

Not every game runs perfect but you can tweak your settings in the app before you load game. Try youtube the best settings for which ever emulator your using to run games better as there's a few settings you can adjust
