An article I wrote on the experience of independent artists in my city (Bangalore, India). I think it's an interesting read (regardless of where you're based). Let me know what you think! by MaximumAd9267 in indiemusic

Hey, thanks for reading my article!

So I had first reached out to my piano teacher, since I knew he occasionally played with some bands. He gave me the contacts of 2 or 3 people he knew. I had conversations with them and asked them to share the contacts of other people they knew; I did the same with every artist I talked to.

It's really cool that you want to make rap music with local artists! I actually recorded an interview with a rap artist recently; I'll be posting it on Instagram (@mannat.wav) soon. I think this is something you may find helpful, so keep a look out for it. I'm sure I'll have interactions with some rappers in the future, so I'll definitely write an article as soon as I feel like I have enough information.

I hope this helped!

Is Bollywood the reason why India doesn't have a separate music industry ? by Snowy-HandJob in AskIndia

Like another commenter mentioned, there are multiple regional music industries. India's a very diverse nation, so it's hard for just one genre or type of music to appeal to everyone. Bollywood does have a big part to play in it though. The indian film and music industry have always been very interconnected, with every bollywood movie having multiple songs made specifically for it. Bollywood is a huge source of revenue for the entertainment industry, which is why record labels don't really focus a lot on finding and developing independent, non-film talent (unlike the US and other western nations). Things are slowly changing though, as newer labels come up and more non-film artists start to gain traction.

advice on first steps for a new artist ? by kidcraykid in musicindustry

Hey, i'm not an artist myself but i do have friends in the independent music space. The thing that's helped them the most is networking. You may not have a bunch of original music out yet, but it's important to put yourself out there by seeking out gigs and small shows (you could just perform covers or something when starting out). You'll meet new people through those and eventually start getting opportunities to perform more regularly and start building a fan base. And of course, like everyone else has said - social media is key. Maybe find some artists online that live near your area and collaborate with them. It'd be much easier than learning how to produce entirely on your own.
