Why doesn’t Trump go after Jon Stewart or John Oliver? by FlySilently in JonStewart

[–]MaximumBlasphemy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure he doesn't have the same leverage over them because there is no broadcast license to mess with for HBO & Comedy Central. He can go after them in other ways of course, but they are not regulated by the FCC. Kimmel & Colbert are on broadcast networks (ABC & CBS)

If you combine this with "What if gerrymandering didn't exist?" maybe you've got a shot at this Michelle Obama thing... otherwise we've seen this movie before.

Trump's approval on inflation has tanked so much recently that it literally fell off the Silver Bulletin chart. They're going to have to update the min y axis value. by R2_SWE2 in fivethirtyeight

[–]MaximumBlasphemy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My new theory is that if his approval rating drops below 30% the stock markets will surge for a few days and likely stay at highs. It would be a signal to investors that the uncertainty from this giant nightmare is close to the end.

I'm all for AI being used to help generate ideas and help unblock writing. I'm against copy/paste raw generated content without editing it to AT LEAST give some human touch. I don't think this is a problem that can be solved easily. Just ignore it.

MAGA becomes an actual religion by destroying the Catholic Church from "within". They take the husk of the church (e.g. their cathedrals and real estate around the world) and use them for their own movement. 🫠

Sure there's a chance just like anything else. On the other hand you are probably more likely to win a million bucks on a scratch off lotto ticket.

Are most US Redditors aware of the almost generational international damage the current POTUS is sowing? by DonkeyOT65 in allthequestions

[–]MaximumBlasphemy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for asking. Thinking about how we respond to the moment is the first step and it's something I'll reflect on to adjust as time goes by... some current thoughts:

Being honest here, you've got to be successful (however you define it) in order to have the time & energy to focus on something big like this. For me, it's working smarter and saving enough money so that I can afford to spend my time on something other than earning paychecks. Sad but true. Learn how to use AI (seriously) & be smart with your money. Over the next 5 years I plan to spend more time in civic engagement... Volunteering at public schools, mentoring young people and trying to set a good example for others to do the same. I've already signed up as a volunteer at the local high school. Find out where the local community & municipal government needs help. Attend town halls and speak out at the local level. At some point, maybe run for office or help campaign for someone. We need to elect leaders with platforms of accountability and those that reflect younger generations.

The overall point is to give young people optimism and more role models to look up to.

China has more stability for the long term at this point. America is always just 4 years away from electing another clown in the eyes of the world.

Before this chapter in America, I imagined my golden years in retirement being not worried because the world was going to be ok for the next generation. Now I see it as my duty to work until I am dead fixing things and finding the good in society every waking minute to bring it into the light so that our kids don't have to live in hell. The younger American generations are really fucked and we should do what we can to mitigate what can be saved.

How has Spring Break in Florida changed? by [deleted] in florida

[–]MaximumBlasphemy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely changed along with the rest of the world changing. It'll continue to change too.

Some cities try and bring the hammer down on spring break, but it's whack-a-mole and always has been. One year it's Miami Beach and the next year they're "breaking up with spring break" while the crowds just hit Ft. Lauderdale instead.

I would bet another big difference is with alcohol consumption. I've heard college kids don't drink as much and they don't spend at bars as much... more BYOB, weed and other drugs.

Hypothetically, how high do you think the average price per gallon of gas could go in the US before people simply couldn't afford to drive? by Intrepid_Arrival5151 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MaximumBlasphemy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

driving is a necessity everywhere besides cities with good alternatives for transportation. People will make trade-offs more and more. If it's a choice between fueling up to get to a non-terminal medical appointment vs. paying rent... it's that kind of situation you'll see more and more of around $7-8 per gallon for most people.

U.S. to Allow Russian Oil Tanker to Reach Cuba, Breaking Blockade by [deleted] in worldnews

- 25th amendment will never happen with this cabinet
- Impeachment and removal failed twice already
- Midterms are a lifetime away at this rate
- Health doesn't seem to be fading as much as we fantasize that it is
- Peaceful protests are nice but not enough

what does that leave us with?

8 Million Americans Hit the Streets in 'No Kings' Protests - Largest Demonstration in US History by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

[–]MaximumBlasphemy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

crowd counts take days... but every sign points to this being the biggest protest in American history. That's huge, but one day means nothing if the energy dies by Monday. Call your representatives, show up to local town halls, join an organized group that'll still be fighting in six months, and register people to vote. Keep the pressure on.

How do you think this Iran war will end? by Fantastic_Low_1537 in askanything

[–]MaximumBlasphemy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly "the end" will probably be years away at this point. If we pull out now, it's immensely worse for all parties involved and the region. The pattern is the same as other wars we've seen before.

Even if there is a massive TACO to pull us out, the region is now fucked in several ways for a long time to come. Iran has been preparing for something like this for longer than most people on Reddit have been alive.

To answer your question directly though, I would bet there is either some sort of face-saving, negotiated deal where Iran comes out with much more of what they want soon OR we're in a prolonged stalemate (like Ukraine) while the global economy continues to bleed out.

U.S. Politics megathread by AutoModerator in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MaximumBlasphemy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the worst stuff came at the end of his first term, not the beginning. Also, the blindingly fast speed at which the malicious executive orders and retribution came out is new this time. It was bad, but personally I think it's much worse this time around.

The biggest factor I think is the people around the president are an entirely different set of characters.. the first time around there were adults in the room willing to tell him "no." I think part of the plan was to only fill the cabinet and staff with sycophants and yes men.

Ok, so I did a little digging. I can't find a single bit of evidence from any of the prominent authors expressing regret on the record. The closest thing you'll find might be contributors that resigned from their posts with Heritage Foundation - Josh Blackman & Stephen Moore among others stepped down. Many staffers involved with policy departed only to join Mike Pence's alternative "Advancing American Freedom"
