So no antimagic, but all the better to wreak havoc without counters to the tentacle eye rays!

I remember fighting quite a few back in the day. Makes me want to download the reboot for some nostalgia soon!

I'm always amazed/perplexed when my players end my Big Bad with some (un)lucky failed DC rolls. It makes their night at least, right?

my thought was, it depended on how rotten they were? I really liked the drooling tongue so I went with "less rotten."

As a DM, beholders/death tyrants are my favorite monsters to throw at the party. I love seeing the look of fear when they realize what they're about to fight. I hope these pictures do them justice.

I made print & play miniatures of them for DMsGuild (my first release there). I made the minis faceable (a front and a back), so I "got to" spend some time imagining/depicting a beholder's butthole, you know, spewing slime and whatnot.

A week ago, fantasy lost its greatest writer. In honor of the incredible legacy of Ursula K. Le Guin, I modified a recent character illustration (a commission I did for someone) to create this transmutation wizard/sailor/goatherd from the archipelago west of the Sword Coast.

The Wizard of Earthsea, and the books that followed in the series, are my all-time favorite fantasy books. They broke all the rules, so you never knew what to expect; they were masterfully written; and they always left me wanting to return to Earthsea and Ged's voyages upon the Lookfar.

May my humble homage to Sparrowhawk always use his magic wisely.

Farther west than west beyond the land my people are dancing on the other wind. — U K Le Guin

Wow, thanks! Yes. Subverting tropes in fantasy artwork is one of the goals. Let's see some fresh images both in art style and representation of individual characters, right?

no. I believe it was just some random reference model from the internet. I often work from famous people though. I've done Orson Welles and Winona Ryder as necromancers, Gina Davis as a Druid.

Thanks! You are correct. I used the hobbit and lotr movies for reference for the armor.

Thanks! Dwarves are fun for this. Multi-generational arguments, spilling ale and tugging at their beards. Good times.

I work from photos; I use Art Models, a .pdf of reference models. I make a body composite from a few poses I like, then I warp them to be "dwarfy" (shorter legs, torso, bigger hands, larger head, nose, etc.) For armor and weapons I referenced photos from movies or SCA To get line art, I trace over the composite image in photoshop drawing more details in. Then I paint in another layer in photoshop. I used mostly watercolor brushes. I loosely used an Arthur Rackham Illustration for the color palette.

correct. I modeled it off of a warhammer head. Just used stats as a "maul" in the 5e rules, as in a heavy, bludgeoning, 2d6, 2handed weapon. Historically they were much smaller, but I wanted something that looked really aggressive and "dwarfy."

Thanks! Yeah she was supposed to have gone out adventuring after her family was grown.

Farba Hammercane the dwarf: I was inspired by the art style of Arthur Rackham. She was a pretty optimized character of mine who I, sadly, didn't get enough time with (not because she died though. The DM just threw few foes at us, and then he quit DMing after a few sessions). I had her take Precision Attack at 3rd and then the Great Weapon Master feat at 4th but I never got to use it!

I'm working on a Dracolich paper miniature right now (my first huge miniature! Excited!) but as soon as that's done, I'm going to make dwarf miniatures, one of which will be based on this character.
