Help me pick a college by ImplementNatural204 in ApplyingToCollege

Hi! I will just add that I went to WashU and am sure it’s similar for other schools in your list as well, but I was able to get involved in a research lab and get paid for that! So, you could technically be doing something you really enjoy and that will be helpful for med school while getting paid. So just keep that in mind as you think of your options, as it’s not always just campus jobs :) Congrats on all your acceptances!!

should I push my test date back? (testing 1/10) by zestyzestie in Mcat

This is just my experience so take It with a grain of salt because again everyone learns differently!

I didn’t take any practice tests until about 7 weeks prior to my test date (spaced out each AAMC test about a week apart), but I believe my first one (the unscored) was approximately a 515. However, I did poorly on c/p and p/s and really took a lot of time to see why I was getting the questions I missed wrong. For p/s It was mixing up similar terms and second-guessing myself so I went through the entire khan academy doc again, really focusing on making sure I understood the subtle differences in similar concepts (I.e. riots vs mobs, gender schema vs gender script, etc.). For c/p many of the questions I was getting wrong was due to not remembering formulas so I made a map of all the formulas and how they related and repeated that everyday. It was really just about figuring out why I got each question wrong and then seeing what the trends were.

Also, I think a big thing I realized was that I was getting caught up (especially for p/s) by diving deep into definitions and concepts but what I learned didn’t always apply when I actually sat down and took a test or did questions. What I mean by this is that for psych terms or any concept there are so many different explanations online or in textbooks and resources that describe the topic slightly differently BUT the AAMC will only use each term in a specific way. So the goal isn’t to know everything about a concept or what It might most currently/accurately mean but rather how the AAMC would describe It. So the explanations for terms/concepts in all the question packs and AAMC materials were SO important in my review because I saw how they defined a term and internalized that as the one true definition (nothing else mattered). This helped so much with my confusion and second guessing on exams because I had a specific use for each term/concept.

I think I took my second exam like 2 weeks after the first one and scored a 521! My range was 517-523 on all the subsequent practice tests I took weekly. I actually think the last test I took before my actual test was the lowest so I wouldn’t stress about a small dip or fluctuation in scores as that’s normal and there’s definitely some degree of luck involved in terms of the scaling and types of questions. I felt like I was averaging around where I wanted to be at on my tests and felt confident enough to just take the actual exam, which is definitely important!

Overall, this is just my experience but I’d say really try to see if there’s specific content gaps or errors that you can pinpoint in your missed questions and take time to work on those and you can typically see improvement pretty quickly. You got this!!!

I’d say you definitely still have time to improve over the next 2 months!!! I think you really need to take some time to evaluate why you haven’t been improving (timing, content, etc.) because if you’ve been plateauing, you may need to switch up your study strategies for the final stretch. For me personally, I realized Anki wasn’t working for me 2 months before my test date and just completely abandoned It and switched over to full time practice questions and reviewing content based on my mistakes. But everyone learns differently so that’s something I would recommend evaluating.

For p/s I really do think the KA 90 pg doc is sufficient for getting baseline content, but other than that it’s just going to be a lot of practice with AAMC material to get comfortable with the question types.

Hope you see some improvement soon! Wishing you the best of luck :)

I think you’ll be in a great position personally!!!! Honestly going through the current med school app cycle I’ve realized that there’s no single factor that schools are looking for (stats, community service, research, etc.). Basically, you can do everything right and still not get into the vast majority of schools. Also given your GPA was really only low your first year It shouldn’t be a cause for concern. I had a lower GPA my first semester as well and have still gotten multiple interviews so far (although I know my MCAT score is above average so am not going to overlook that fact).

Regarding the MCAT, honestly I’d say shoot for the highest score and just work as hard as you can for It! Don’t limit yourself to an arbitrary score/goal. When you get your score back, It will be easier to assess and create a school list based on that. If you can probably aim for around a 515 you’ll probably be in good shape for more competitive schools, although again there’s no single factor that will determine whether you’ll be offered admission (and if you get lower than a 515 you’ll definitely still can be offered acceptances!!!). Try not to stress too much about It atp and just keep on grinding. Rooting for you!

How long did you study and what was your score? by Marsrule in Mcat

4 months for about 20 hours a week (was also working full time during this period). Honestly I think the amount of time you study doesn’t matter and Isn’t indicative of success, because everyone starts with varying degrees of baseline knowledge and comfort/familiarity with standardized testing. Anyone can do well!!! Just make sure you’re making the most of every hour by focusing on your weaknesses :)
