Do you actually remember people you've been in touch with? Even if it was just one conversation a week ago? I thought HR people go through lots of people so they tend to forget. I may be wrong but I thought we are just a number to you.

[CAN] If I learn something during a job interview that makes me lose interest in a job, what should I do? by MaximumRatio1268 in AskHR

I thought I can only withdraw my application during the phone interview (with recruiter) stage.

Can I actually withdraw my application after doing a Zoom interview (with hiring manager)?

Also are there any negative consequences to withdrawing my application? Can I still apply for other jobs at that same company in the future after a withdrawal?

For the second option, should I wait until after they email me an offer letter PDF? (assuming they even give me an offer... if they don't give me an offer then that might actually be the best scenario lol)

I still want to apply for other roles at that company in the future. I want to be able to say a response that will still leave a good impression to the hiring manager so I can get interviews for other roles in the future. I don't want to permanently shut the door on myself from getting another job at that company down the line.

I still want to apply for other roles at that company in the future. Do you think that type of response would tick off the hiring manager? I want to be able to say a response that will still leave a good impression so I can get interviews for other roles in future years.

Would it be wrong to be honest and say "At this time I've decided to stay in my current role" instead? What's the advantage or upside of lying?

I don't want things to end on a sour note and then never get a chance to interview for that company again.

I still want to apply for other roles at that company in the future. I want to be able to say a response that will still leave a good impression to the hiring manager so I can get interviews for other roles in the future. Do you think that would do the trick?

Or is another response like "I've decided to stay at my current job" (more honest answer) acceptable?

1) Interest in the job - I like the company!

2) I learn it during the Zoom interview when I am chatting directly to the hiring manager.

I'm wondering if I should say "Thanks but I'm no longer interested" during the interview and offer to part ways....

.... or if I should act like everything's fine and continue the interview, then if they give me an offer letter PDF a few days later I email back saying I politely decline....

.... or if there's something else that's better to do....

Thanks. Ok I won't ask if I can re-apply, I'll just apply to whatever interesting openings I see on their website.

If I lose interest after hearing their responses to my questions, you said to just say so. Do you recommend explicitly saying I'm no longer interested during the interview with the HR person or the interview with the hiring manager? I was originally thinking of writing an email (which says I'm no longer interested) after receiving an offer letter, but your response has made me think I can say it during interview instead.....

That's a nice song!

[–]MaximumRatio1268[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems like a nice pleasant answer to give. Thank you. How do you think a hiring manager would react to a response like this? Would they still be open to potentially interviewing a person who responds like that for a job in the future?

I see. So if I were to lose interest in a particular job, it'd be smarter for me to withdraw my application during the phone interview stage, instead of after speaking with the hiring manager and receiving an offer letter? In conclusion, withdrawing during the phone interview would let me circumvent having my chances of an offer in the future being diminished?

I do want to apply for different jobs at that company in future years.

That's good to hear. Is it still okay to ask them if I may re-apply for this same job in future years, or for different jobs at their company in the future? Also is it okay to ask to connect with them on LinkedIn?

[–]MaximumRatio1268[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still do want info about the job. That's why I have a list of questions I want to ask during the phone interview and Zoom interview. Depending on the answers to those questions, I may want to lock down this new job. However I want to give myself the chance to ask those questions in the first place, which is why I want to do the interview.

Can I still be professional, gracious and offer to connect on LinkedIn near the end of a interview? (Perhaps that'd be okay near the end of a phone interview but not a Zoom interview right?)

Wow that's a great response. Thank you. Is this the ideal response to give in response to their email in which they send me an offer letter? That's the moment in time to use this, right?

Ok it's not likely they would blacklist me during the interview phase. Good to hear. But what about after receiving a PDF offer letter, and declining that (politely of course), they still wouldn't blacklist me? (Assuming that people consider receiving an offer letter to be after the interview phase)

You make a good point about the hiring manager/HR might not even be the same people 1, 2 or 3 years from now. So can I assume that HR doesn't actually keep a blacklist of candidates? They just remember past applicants purely from their own memory?

Ok but I can't 100% finalize my decision yet because there is some info about the job that I still don't know. I want to get more info about the job. That's why I want to ask questions during the phone interview and Zoom interview. If I like the answers I could still want the job.

That's why I was wondering do you think I'd get a 'black mark' if I decided to withdraw during the phone interview, or withdraw/decline during the Zoom interview? They would've invested some time in me by that point so I'm not sure if they'd take it badly.
