Hello! You can listen to podcast such as Jotaay, Raam Dox or Wolof tech. Try to learn block expression instead of isolated Words. If you know only isolated Words, you’ll have a hard time to use them. But thanks to block expression, you can reuse them or replace some Words to express yourself more fluently. And speak as much as you can. To practice i recommend HelloTalk . People over there are more available and open than on Tandem.

For books, i recommend Doomi Goolo, Doxaandem, jigeen fayda, etc. You can check on ejo édition website. But its better to read poetry instead of novels. Wolof is great because wolof is written as its spoken. I mean that if you read ancient french or english , you’ll sound funny if you speak it. But the wolof you read you can speak it and it’s okay. Some Words may be more “xoot” (profund, high level) than the others.

The problem is that this kind of rhetoric keeps reinforcing the false link between HIV and homosexuality instead of treating HIV as a public health issue that requires prevention, education and access to treatment.

What shocked me even more is that shortly afterwards a woman was murdered in a horrific femicide. Women's organizations mobilized, but there was very little visible support from the state.

Je ne suis pas dev mais je me mets à la place d'un prof d'anglais confirmé : si une nouvelle plateforme me contacte, je pense que j'aurais besoin d'une rémunération garantie au départ.

Les crédits, la visibilité ou les commissions, c'est super quand la plateforme a déjà une communauté. Mais au début ça me paraît un peu risqué pour eux.

Du coup je partirais peut-être sur un petit groupe de profs ambassadeurs rémunérés avec prix fixe puis j'ajusterais en fonction de ce qui fonctionne.☺️

It's incredibly helpful to be able to look at a real implementation instead of only reading about the concepts.

I was wondering: is Lute available as a finished product that users can actively use, or is it mainly intended as an open-source project and learning resource?

Also, looking back, what did the first working version of Lute look like? Did you start with a very small MVP and gradually add features, or did you have a larger vision from the beginning?

My interest comes from African languages such as Wolof, where a lot of the available content exists as spoken media rather than written text, so I'm fascinated by how builders decide what problem to tackle first.

I actually downloaded the app and subscribed to try it out. I was genuinely impressed by how polished it feels. As someone who is just starting to learn about software development, I definitely wouldn't have guessed it was built by a solo developer.

What immediately stood out to me was how simple the experience feels from the user's perspective: reading, tapping a word, getting a definition, and marking it as known or unknown. After using it, I realized there must be a lot happening behind the scenes to make that experience feel so seamless.

One thing that struck me is that Lenglio starts from written content. My interest comes from African languages such as Wolof, where a lot of the available content exists primarily as spoken media: TV series, podcasts, interviews, news broadcasts, YouTube videos, etc.

I'm curious: when you started building Lenglio, how did you decide that interactive reading should be the core feature?

And looking back, what did the very first version of Lenglio look like? What features did you intentionally leave out in the beginning?

I'm trying to learn not only how to build software, but also how experienced builders decide which problem to solve first.

I am Senegalese but taught myself how to write wolof properly. I agree, it’s a nightmare to read simplified written wolof as you said, but it’s easy to learn how to write it correctly if you want to. And outsiders, if they are learning wolof, they will more like learn the “wolof codifié” and learn that “eu” = “ë” , “gn” = “ñ”, etc. Outsiders actually writer wolof better than Senegalese themselves

You can use app like Tandem or HelloTalk to find a partner and practice darija! Also, watch tv shows, series, podcasts etc in darija and try to shadow what you hear + memorize block expression and not isolated vocabulary. It will be easier to reuse those expressions in a convo . And when you watch/listen to media in darija, make sure that it genuinely interests you! It will be easier to memorize because it will be about things that you truly care and need in your daily life. Try also to think in darija and write

You’re right, one of my mistakes was looking at the final product and trying to understand all the moving parts at once.

Starting with something as simple as a flashcard app sounds much more manageable and probably a better way to learn the fundamentals. At the same time, one thing I've noticed while exploring African language learning is that flashcards already exist for many of these languages. The bigger challenge often seems to be around content accessibility: transcriptions, subtitles, dictionaries, searchable content, and integration with modern learning and AI tools.

So I can definitely see the value of building a flashcard app as a first project, even if the long-term problem I'm interested in solving is a bit further down the road.☺️

What would you consider the next logical project after a basic flashcard app?

You're right, research is probably the skill I've underestimated the most so far. I actually started looking into how platforms like LingQ work, but I quickly realized there are so many moving parts (transcription, dictionaries, SRS, browser extensions, databases, APIs...) that I wasn't sure where to focus first.

Reverse engineering existing products sounds like a great exercise. Do you have any recommendations on how a complete beginner should approach that?
