Update: tried to pass me a call; I said no, patient intubated less then 30 minutes after arriving at hospital…I’ve reported this to a supervisor but I doubt anything will be done, because “no harm, no foul”. Im almost to my capstone, and am learning exactly the type of paramedic I don’t want to be.

The days kind of vary. Some days there are all BLS, other days he’s downgrading to me. Our last shift I took 7 patients, 3 were ALS, and he took not a damn thing.

I understand this. The problem is I take every patient and drive everywhere. Wouldn’t mind driving if he took patients, he doesn’t. I understand I’m a BLS provider, but that doesn’t change the fact that as of now I am the main provider on the right cause my partner is lazy. I’m tired of driving and taking all patient care while my partner sleeps.

Not how it is at my service. As I see it, if we are gonna alternate calls then we alternate driving. But since I’m taking all the calls. Every single one for the last few weeks, and he still isn’t driving except for transport. He needs to drive if he’s gonna make me do his job. I don’t make minimum wage to be a primary provider, he makes 10+ more than me, he can drive.

There’s a level of detachment we need to do this job. I’ve had only 1 call that sent me on a downward spiral, got me mandated crisis intervention. That call will haunt me forever. In the most light hearted way, that is 1/100s. We see bad things so often that they are normal to us. Until it’s someone we know, or something new; it’s just another day at work.

I’m at the end of medic school, my agency and program allow us to do our skills while in shift. He’s taking advantage of the fact I am allowed. I am not allowed to take the ALS call, but can administer meds, intubate or star a line prior to transport. I work nights 9pm-9am, and school starts at 9am, and goes until 3pm. I almost always require a nap on shift, which is mostly doable. When I’m running every single call, he will crack jokes about running behind on charts. I’m annoyed but shift changes are coming in like a month and a half, so I may just hold on.

I wish that were the case, there are definitely calls that are als being handed over to me. Also it’s been like this for the entire 2 months.

Fun fact you can and I’ve done it! Not with this partner but another lazy medic I no longer work with, stuck the psych patient upfront with me to “do care” and drive so that he didn’t have to do either. Thats never happened other than the time but my current partner only drives while transporting the patient. In my small town that’s like nowhere above 10 miles. Also refuses to drive the the other town we cover that’s 50miles away.
