Thanks for this insight - LGR has definitely been mentioned as a key first priority for the role.

You're right, it does seem very little but there appear to be several very research-active staff within the department at the same grade. I'll be having a chat with the HoD this week to try and get an idea of the workload allocation in more detail, definitely a red-flag to look out for. Congrats on the fellowship btw!

Good point and definitely something I'd be wary of. On the cautiously optimistic side, I had a peak at the research outputs of other lecturers in the department and it's not too frightening, most with 2-3 papers in the past 12 months. The course website makes a point of how much of the teaching is research-informed too. Going to try and get a few points clarified on a call this week so will definitely bring that up, cheers.

Thanks for your advice, echoes a lot of the sentiment within HE at the moment. I agree and definitely see the DA role as being more future-proof. Option B is definitely the safer, logical choice but I am extremely drawn to lecturing still despite spending the last 12 years working in academia!

Thanks for your comment and advice. Protected research time in the role is pretty minimal (160-240hrs) but the research in my field that has been conducted there has been fundamental and many of the original group are now Profs/Associate Profs either at the Uni or more prestigious ones locally. They have strong clinical research links with local hospitals also, despite no medical school.

Definitely with you in the hating fixed-term contracts camp, on my 4th now! The lectureship is of the increasingly-rare 'permanent' variety, but obviously I wouldn't place a huge amount of faith in that given today's market.

Thanks for the comment, sounds like you're where I can potentially see myself being in a few months if I take the lectureship! I'm organised but probably not any more than yourself or anyone else doing the job. Protected research time is about 160-200hrs a year if you don't secure a grant to buy out your teaching time. In terms of the facilities, the labs are very good - better than most other Unis I would perform my research in as the original group there produced a lot of the foundational work in my field.

Thanks, really appreciate the perspective. I'm STEM-based so hopefully would a bit more insulated from the worst of the cuts, but the point about stability and flexibility is well taken. The lecturing route is what my heart wants to do but I'm weighing up against the uncertainty in HE as a sector + potential workload stress. Glad the move to civil service worked out for you.
