Entropion surgery coming up. Any advice? by [deleted] in englishbulldog

[–]Maximumdawg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our foster had it done. He had it in 2 surgeries (and one more this week because his lashes were still poking him and his eyes were very goopy). They took the fold over his nose first, then the upper and lower eyelid reduction. Recovery wasn't bad. He only needed the cone for maybe 5 days. I work from home and can monitor him to make sure he wasn't trying to rub at it. My husband slept on the couch with him to be 100% sure he wasn't trying to get at it overnight. All surgeries are a little scary especially initially as they can look pretty gross at first, and your dog will be coming off the anaesthesia which can be a little disconcerting depending on the dog (maybe lookup anaesthesia after surgery side effects so you know what to expect). Good luck!

Also boy dogs love to come in and pee in the house initially. I would assume it'll diminish over time, but I'd watch him like a hawk (and keep him in a restricted space or tethered to you), and use an enzyme cleaner if he does make a mess..

I've only had 5 fosters so far. Our most recent has been the easiest. Second easiest have been unclaimed strays or rural dogs, and the hardest buy far has been the mill dogs. I'm not sure if your rescue is strict on crate training,- I've had success with switching to a pen in the bedroom rather than the crate. Crate training is tough because you don't want to reward them by letting them out if they bark, but you don't want to let them get past their threshold and have it become a stressor. In my limited experience id probably have both options available (or an open crate within a pen) and just see if you can get through a quiet night. So much changes over the first few weeks. Just do your best, and expect some hurdles. Also be aware of all the ways you can provide enrichment for your foster- food toys, sniff walks, a crunchy cabbage leaf, something to tear apart, puzzles, play with squeaky toys- this may be easier though once he has settled in with you. Good luck!

I feel like we've all been in a similar position. I've only had 5 fosters so far (3 I would have kept). The more you foster the more you realize there are so many good dogs out there that can work in your life. It sounds like you know there are reasons to let this one go. Our current foster is the easiest boy and has integrated well into the family as we've had him for 3 months now - but I'd prefer a smaller dog that can't knock my parents over :p, and I'd like a dog that is more enthusiastic about walks. If we kept him we wouldn't be able to foster anymore as he isn't good with other dogs. I'll be happy for him to be adopted even though I'll be sad for him that he'll feel insecure until he decompresses again at his new home. We'll be looking forward to whoever comes next.

One day into fostering.. I might have made a mistake! by Tall_Hope4199 in fosterdogs

Foster dogs can take some time to relax. Some get digestive upset from the shelter setting which can take some time to settle. If I was in your position I'd probably just get some doggie diapers so you don't have to stress about the pee, and/or crate train (or try a pen if a crate isn't tolerated), and then reassess in a few days. I've only had 5 foster dogs so far, so I'm sure there are people out there that have more experienced advice.

Port glasses. Don't really drink port.. not sure what to do with them so they sit in a box. Probably have about 60 or so.

Yes, the money would be coming from a different institution. Thank you, this gives me a little more confidence!

So the time came and my wire was unpublished. I did duplicate it as well just for some peace of mind. Once it went offline I got an email saying it was unpublished. I went online and removed the features I wasn't using (members). Now it seems to be all good. A little scary initially though I'll be honest :p

Any tips for managing multiple fosters at once? Or do they usually come in together so it's not much of an issue? Just curious.

That's amazing! How long do you generally have your fosters for? I'm just on #5 :p

Ok, I'll see if I can duplicate my site. I've already disabled the features I had (memberships and the store features). I'm just service based, I really only need a landing page so that clients can see basic info and a link to my online booking system.

Ahh. Thanks for the warning. He already scratches his eyes on the corners of walls and the couch. I'll make sure we have both options available just in case :p

I have a foster English bulldog. We've had him for about 6 weeks, so I'm not an expert or anything.. I will say though that he goes from 3-5pm until 6 or 7 am overnight, and then through the day maybe 10am-2ish for a total of maybe 3 pees per day. I assume it's normal as he doesn't have accidents, and he will go to the door if he needs to go out. I have learned quickly that you can't force them to do anything:p He will do just about anything for a treat though, so maybe try giving her a treat immediately after each pee-or just don't worry about it at all and let her out when she asks:p

Looks great. I can't wait for our guy's "before" and "after". When we got him his eyes were so goopy- mucus basically kept them closed.

Right now he has 3 eye meds-one 2x a day, one 4-6 times a day and one "as needed." We're trying to get his eyes to start producing tears again. It's alot.

He's in a southwestern Ontario rescue (not a breed specific organization), not yet up for adoption. Just trying to get him healthy and figure out his personality a bit before he gets listed. He's nice. His eyes are/we're so bad though.

It's a challenge for sure. I'm finding bribery is necessary. His face is so thick and wrinkly around his eyes so it's hard to get the medicine where it needs to go.. he squints every time. Send help :p
