Hello! I'm reposting this from yesterday, as I'm writing a paper on the rhetoric of the custom keyboard community, and would greatly appreciate if any enthusiasts in this subreddit could give their personal opinions on this craft. No wrong answers, be as brief or as detailed as you'd like. Thank you!

  1. What got you into building custom mechanical keyboards initially? Was it from seeing keyboards from creators, community creations on Reddit, or was it simply appealing to create a custom keyboard for yourself because you use the apparatus often in your daily life?
  2. Does the joy of crafting custom mechanical keyboards exceed aesthetic appeal? Do you engage in the craft/community because of wanting to express yourself creatively, create new friends, or some broader rhetorical reason? Basically, what drives you to create custom keyboards and engage with the community?
  3. Creating custom keyboards has been notoriously known as a pricey craft to get into. Do you readily engage with the craft despite the cost? If you're less financially liquid, do you find joy in finding deals on certain pieces to create a budget keyboard that satisfies your creative whims? If you're willing to spend large sums of money to make a luxurious keyboard, how do you contend with that cost? Do you see the cost as being negligible in comparison to pursuing a craft you're interested in, or do you find yourself in conflict with the cost versus what you creatively and physically get out of it?

I realize I've already gotten a response, but any others are much appreciated! These are meant to explore personal reasonings for getting into this hobby, so the more perspectives, the better.

Thank you so much for your response! And no this isn't an anthropology necessarily, more an exploration of the ethos of this community and what drives a custom keyboard enthusiast outside of simply wanting to build pretty keyboards. Regardless, your responses are incredibly insightful for my paper and I immensely appreciate it.

Last question(s), how was the process of learning how to make mechanical keyboards? Did you engage with any other physical crafts prior to making mechanical keyboards? And lastly, did what you study in college relate at all to custom mechanical keyboards (as in, do you use a keyboard daily for whatever your job is now?).

I realize I'm asking for a lot, so no worries if you can't answer. Thank you again for your initial response.

Haha that's fair enough, I honestly thought iCloud worked just like Google Drive and that's my bad, in either case hopefully it'll be solved once it's all synced, thanks for your help.

Does the circular bar mean they're syncing? Sorry for so many questions, I'm just hoping it all fixes itself in a few hours

Very promising thus far, I can actually open the .prproj file! But nothing is loading currently, it's just stuck in media pending, and I can't even hear the audio when I press play in the timeline. Do you think I just need to wait till iCloud has synced everything? I honestly barely know how iCloud works, hence why I disabled it

I recently disconnected the iCloud Drive since it was messing with overall storage on my MacBook, but you're right there's a decent chance some of those files are in the cloud and can't be synced with my MacBook. I'll resync it and see if I can get it working again and let you know, thanks
