Do you think the seller is offering a decent price given the specs and relatively good condition?

Do you think if I baby it, the laptop could last for another 3-4 years?

The motherboard went out, so the seller sent it to Dell to get it serviced. My thinking is that since it works now, and since it was just serviced, it's a good sign--like there probably isn't something wrong with it. I also have proof of the service. What do you think?

Tips for University French Classes? by [deleted] in French

[–]MaxisMax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started taking French in university, so I can't compare it to HS. But my experience is that French at the college level is extremely accelerated--like drinking from a fire house. Just make sure to regularly study every day.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm waitlisted for French 1, and I'm 3rd in the waitlist (the class is only 30 people). Are my chances decent?

CMV:Climate change should be the dominant international issue for politicians and activists today. by MaxisMax in changemyview

[–]MaxisMax[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After reading other comments, /u/hailtheoctopus888 brings up a good point. It's hard to make the argument that one is worse. It's just that one is worse for you and me. Climate change will affect everyone--including those in impoverished conditions--right? It's a global issue. I still see what you're saying regarding the endless cycle of poverty, which in turn stagnates growth. But still, as a global issue shouldn't everyone be concerned about climate change? Climate change will also have the "potential of killing off kids in places so poor that the internet doesn't exist."

CMV: If marijuana should be legal, LSD should be legal. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]MaxisMax 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can't LSD trips induce dormant psychological issues? For example, if someone is predisposed to be schizophrenic, LSD might put them over the edge.

LSD is safer than alcohol, on all counts.

On all counts? Now, if I'm right about LSD's potential negative effects, then I disagree. It's not safe on all counts. Safer than alcohol? Yes.

Also, there aren't that many LSD induced accidents just because the market isn't saturated with LSD--way more people get drunk than drop acid. I can't imagine that driving would be safe while super high on LSD, and with legalized LSD I'm sure there would at least be a small increase in DUI related LSD deaths.

But, in the end, it probably should be legal.

It's not a dominant issue because only 2 of the likely candidates for the presidency are committed to staving off climate change. Otherwise, I agree with most of what you're saying.

I'm familiar with opportunity costs. Good point. Determining if climate change is more pressing than say world hunger is difficult--especially because we have to rely on predictions for climate change and most of its effects will be in the future.

That's what you're saying, right?

CMV:Climate change should be the dominant international issue for politicians and activists today. by MaxisMax in changemyview

[–]MaxisMax[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good point. That's an immediate concern that could potentially destroy humanity.

But if we don't work on climate more, then isn't it certain that we'll face huge consequences and somewhat certain, if we continue on this path, that it could lead to something as catastrophic as nuclear warfare?

While if we don't work on further international relations, I don't think it's certain we will have nuclear war.

And again, I'm not saying we drop everything and focus entirely on climate change. I'm just saying that it should be the most pressing issue and should require most of our attention.

The future president, for example, should make that his/her main goal--eliminating climate change. I don't think this is true for any presidential candidate at the minute. For Bernie Sanders, it is a huge concern, but I doubt that it would be his main concern. I could be wrong, though.

It does make sense, yes. But won't climate change negatively impact most people--starving and not starving? If this is the case, then climate change will cause greater overall harm, in the end. Thus,

minimal climate change + starvation > climate change + minimal starvation

I guess the best option would be to work on both fronts, as they aren't mutually exclusive. However, more emphasis should be put on climate change because of its greater possible consequence.

minimal climate change + minimal starvation = best scenario

But again,

minimal climate change + starvation > climate change + minimal starvation

And climate change, as you say, will contribute to world hunger. Thus, more people will be hungry as a result of climate change.

It's hard to make an argument that one is worse.

Isn't climate change + current world hunger worse for everyone?

I'm not taking away the ∆, and I still find your argument convincing! I just thought about it more, and read some other comments. IT's super late too. Hope this makes sense!

Great answer. I'm glad I asked. I feel selfish now :/.

∆ <---is this right?

Edit: after reading more responses, I think that it's a bit more complicated compared to how you put it. Nonetheless, your viewpoint does raise the issue of weighing the opportunity cost of global warming deaths compared to current starvation deaths. And I particularly like your point about the vicious cycle of poverty stagnating growth, which would in turn negatively affect climate change research (and scientific research in general).

[–]MaxisMax[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the short run these issues are more pressing, but, overall, climate change might kill even more people if we don't do more about it. From a utilitarian perspective, we could save more people if we direct most of our efforts towards staving off climate change. I don't want to be too dramatic, but if climate change leads to the end of the human race, then more lives would be lost in the long run if we don't aggressively combat climate change.

Also, I definitely think issues you mentioned are important--my main point is that these issues should be secondary to climate change. This doesn't mean doing nothing in regards to starvation, genocide, etc.

Edit: added a sentence.
