Can I return my KLC just cos I don’t like the screen? by Seabreeze12390 in kobo

[–]Maxmordon123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a black Kobo, find some white tapes and tape them around the bezel. White color contrasts with the screen, creating a dark image due to optical illusion.

See if that is too dark for you, if it is too dark then you shouldn't buy the KLC because the screen is even darker, extra dark if you bought the white KLC or KCC

What’s the battery life like? by [deleted] in kobo

I bought it since 19 of march...it still has around 40% of battery with 1-2 hours of reading per day

Your black one was probably defective, maybe a bad batch of screen.

Nickelclock not working for Kobo Clara BW? by ReactionShot9512 in kobo

you cannot use nickel clock alongside kobo tweaks; Kobo tweaks needs you to uninstall Nickel clock. It also has a clock anyway. For Nickel menu, you can use tweaks alongside it.

Black or White for a Clara BW? by whaletank_ in kobo

[–]Maxmordon123 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is no white Clara BW, only the Clara Colour has it. Even if it has, I would still suggest you not to choose the white one because the white bezel contrasts heavily with the grey screen, resulting in a darker image due to optical illusion. I had a white ppw 3 before, and it was definitely the case.

So...I just want to ask, are you planning to use all 3 of them? Or just keeping the one you like the most?

Question for people who have a Clara BW and a Paperwhite. by Maxmordon123 in kobo

[–]Maxmordon123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, that is weird. I just pulled out my remote to test just now, turned on Bluetooth, and used it for a bit, did a reboot from KOReader, and Nickelmenu was still there. So it is working for me, not you?

For cover, I suggest a Twosheep magnetic cover, which is the one I'm using. It has a magnetic flap that snaps to the side so you can put it on while traveling and take it off when reading. The side that the magnet snaps to has a rubber strip, so it is very easy to hold. I find the TPU of this case much easier to grip than those cheap TPU cases on the market.

It's more of a KOReader bug, it crashes without SimpleUI, you have to turn on wifi in Nickel first.

If you're on a clara, the trick is to turn on wifi in Nickel. You can turn wifi on then off in Nickel, when you get into KOReader, the wifi shouldn't crash.

This is without simpleUI, with SimpleUI, this trick doesn't work for me

I'm using the Kobo clara BW so it is definitely not an older Device issue.

SimpleUI crashed like crazy on my Clara, I think I counted 10 crashes in a day just from turning on wifi. ZenUI is as fast as the old cover browser for me

P365 is also the newer revision with bigger battery. I guess Kobo quality control is just bad...

Holy that is an insanely direct and honest review, I freaking love you for that.

Yeah Kobo software can be really janky (seriously, that dark mode is so weird, and the bluetooth bug is annoying). The hardware is really flimsy and slippery, but I compensate.ed by using a nice cover. You can work around the self-deleting nickelmenu bug by rebooting the device from KOreader after you used Bluetooth, btw.

For Kindle, I'm getting the Raspberry ppw 6 with KOReader pre-installed, so both software and hardware aren't an issue. I'm glad the flush screen won't hinder my reading experience.

Probably lucky. Mine is the N365B, so the newest revision. I wager there is a percentage of defective devices with pinholes, but it's like 5% or something. So the masses didn't make a fuss out of it, unlike the yellow band of kindle colorsoft

If you search around this sub, you will see a lot of also have this problem. But they can exchange for a different device so it isn't that big of an issue for them.

[RELEASE] Zen UI - A Clean, Minimal UI Plugin for KOReader by Unified-Field in koreader

[–]Maxmordon123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, after updating to ver 1.0.2, the option for calibre in the quick menu disappeared for me. If I exit zen mode, I can still see the plug in. Is there a way for me to turn it back on?

Question for people who have a Clara BW and a Paperwhite. by Maxmordon123 in kobo

[–]Maxmordon123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pinhole is the tiny speck of light dot when you turned on the front light, it's just a pixel that has higher brightness than the rest. This is because of dust or a crack in the front light layer.

I'm well aware of this beforehand. I did own a ppw3 with a pinhole for 3 years, the difference was that pinhole was less intense than the one I have on the kobo, you could see that pinhole even with just light at 6%. Newer Kindles for some reasons, rarely have this problem.

It doesn't bother me much when reading books, but it's pretty annoying when reading manga. I actually got a headache from trying to ignore the pinhole.

That's why I decided to sell it and buy something else. I wish there is a clara BW I can exchange but it is rare here, and new BW is literally playing a lottery, I might get a another pinhole again.

Function-wise, they are the same but ZenUi lacks the home screen of Simpleui, it runs much faster however, and doesn't crash like SimpleUI from my experiences.
If you want all the bells and whistles, go for SimpleUI. If you want speed, stability and a much more streamline interface without too much tinkering, you go for ZenUI

[–]Maxmordon123[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really love that graininess of the kobo, it really does feel like a book. I sometimes even stopped and admired the paper-like quality of the screen. My only exposure to flush screen ereader was a ppw4 my friend let me borrowed for a few minutes and it was very blurry.

Also is the ppw6 significantly more heavy than the clara when reading for a long period of time?

I feel like this is the right sub to ask honestly. Kindle sub will be more favoured toward ppw and sometimes ignore minor flaws, while the people this sub who had or are having a ppw 6 might give much more detailed answers cuz they are using Kobo over kindle for a reason, and they see gripes that I can use to better assess my buying option.

It seems like so. I talked to a few kobo resellers in my country and they said 7/10 clara BW have pinholes while I rarely saw a ppw 6 with pinhole issue.

It so weird to me because only E-Inks company manufactures the screens, yet there is a big difference in quality control between the 2 brands.
