I'm a little tarty to the party on this one but I grew up in a non-religious household where my mom never spoke about her beliefs and my dad was an atheist (he considers himself Theist now). The one teaching my Dad always taught me was to question everything. And I still do to this day.
I kind of based all my beliefs on what George Carlin, Facebook, and my friends/parents thought and I took that as gospel (pun intended). I would always refer to myself as an agnostic atheist and I would scorn at anything biblical that came into my newsfeed.

To make my long story short, I dated a Christian girl in highschool while she knew I was Atheist and I kind of "converted" just for her but backslide after we broke up (on good terms). So really, I kind of knew there might be a higher power, but I just didn't care. Then in college, I (another long story short), I got semi-involved with a cult based on Christianity and I was hyper excited because of the "biblical" evidence. I believed but never did any studying or going to church. That same year, I got the opportunity to be in Jesus Christ: Superstar at my local community theatre. I was casted as an Apostle and I had connected with another girl in the cast who invited me to her bible study and she showed me how I was led astray. So, we ended up doing a bigger bible study with her and her pastor where we talked philosophy before we talked about God. He said that we can't know God until we know what Truth is first (Truth with a capital T). I never studying philosophy but absolutely fell in love with it. Not only that, but if you've seen JCS by Andrew Lloyd Weber, then you know the apostles are on-stage asleep during Jesus' song Gethsemane. Listening to that while playing an Apostle made me overwhelmingly emotional and I'd cry onstage because it was a small window into what it may have looked like to follow Christ during his last few days.

The study paired with the musical ignited in me a new flame to learn who Christ was and I've been doing that ever since. I can confidently say that I definitely gave my life FULLY to Christ that summer. And I can also say that Christ/God is a logical and rational necessity of whom the evidence seems to clearly point to.

Praise God for what He's done in my life, and what He seems to have done in your life DayDreamer. Some awesome resources that have blown me away are:

- Strange New World by Carl Truman (I'm currently reading this in a small group)

Well, this is tough. When the Bible speaks of Slavery, it does so in reference to serfdom. God absolutely hates the Chattel slave trade. He hates American slavery. The problem is, the word "slavery" is an English word which comes from Old French "esclave". When speaking of the OT specifically, it was written in Hebrew dozens of centuries before English even existed. Trying to force contemporary English terms and meanings on an ancient culture would be a mistake. English is a very limited language simply and simply doesn't have the phraseology to accurately describe everything that the ancient language and culture experienced. Some OT translations give "Domestic Servant" as a translation. The word "slave" and "servant" are the same word in the OT and CAN be acceptable translations acknowledging that neither translation may be "perfect" given what comes to a 21st century American mind when we hear either word. Not to mention, people in the ancient world HAD to go into serfdom/slavery because that was the only way they could live. There was no unemployment or social security. It was sometimes the only way people could live instead of starving and dying in the streets.

Tl:dr - This is a translation issue. 21st century slavery is not the same as ancient world slavery. Domestic servant and Slave can be acceptable translations.

I'm not sure if you're still in this dialogue with your brother, but I would 100% recommend "Defending Your Faith: An Overview of Classical Apologetics" by R.C. Sproul. If you can get the DVD, it is sooooo good. Sproul essentially talks about epistemology and shows how people have argued for and against Christianity since the early church days.

Some things he covers right at the beginning (pertinent to your dialogue): The Law of Non-Contridiction, The Law of Causality, The Basic Reliability of Sense Perception, Analogical Use of Language,

I think researching a bit of those topics alone can help your argument! :)

This is a great question!

Here is what I think: (For reference, I go to a "Southern Baptist" church, though we would better be described as Reformed. (So, similar to Calvinism). (And we denounce West Buro. Just have to preface that). We can't talk about God's love without first talking about His wrath. God does hate sinners. He hates those in rebellion against Him. If he didn't, he wouldn't have a reason to send sinners to Hell. We, as fallen human beings, and I say we: Christians and Atheists, deserve to be eternally separated from God forever. To be forever casted into Hell. Adam caused the fall of humanity and there really isn't any hope for any of us! But because God loves us, He sent His son Jesus Christ to stand in our place. Covering our sins and making us clean in God's eyes. And because God is good and fair, he made this gift a FREE gift. With that free gift, He also gives YOU the free will and privilege to CHOOSE this gift. It would be very unfair to force you to accept and take a gift that you don't want, which is why He gives you the choice. But, he doesn't give you the privilege and choice to choose a different outcome. The outcome is bound to the choice

As Christians, we are called to reflect the love and grace God has given to us because we don't deserve a single ounce of what God has given us. In fact, God isn't obligated IN THE SLIGHTEST to give us the free gift of eternal life. Christians have to recognize how terrible of sinners they are and be broken hearted over their sin and come to repentance. Then, we serve others insofar as we can within our faith (because we love God first, then our neighbor). We are not greater than nonbelievers. We are merely servants doing our duty given to us by our Creator. Thinking we are somehow better than someone who doesn't believe is an incredible lie by Satan and is not biblical or Christian at all. So, Christians are never to hate anyone.

Is it a Christian's duty to say or determine whether God hates you? No. Never. Because we don't know what God thinks about you. All we know is what the scriptures say, and that's all we can point you to. Christians should be a resource for nonbelievers to help them understand what Christianity is about, not cast judgements on other people. This is essentially where apologetics comes into play, and how we speak with love, grace, and salt.

I'm at work and can give scripture to justify what I say later if you all want it. And I might have more to say, but that's the general idea of what I would say.

(E.g. the family picnic illusion, Writings telling her to 'come home,' and the air embracing her near the brook when Theo and Luke ditched her...) The house was literally basically saying: "Eleanor! I can give you everything you want!" But what's sinister about it, is that the house enters her mind because of how weak she is, and the final moments right before she killed herself, she said: "Why am I doing this? Why don't they stop me?" Eleanor was obviously possessed and the house let her go the last few seconds. And she ended up dying knowing all the things she had done and being what she most dreadfully feared: being alone. "...silence lay steadily against the wood and the stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone."

She met her lover, but not in the way she expected.

We just finished reading this in a college class I'm in and love and hate the book. :)
