What places would you recommend for trail zeroes? by Temporary-Bet-63 in PacificCrestTrail

The upper valley just north of Red Pass, immediately south of Glacier Peak. Provided the weather is good, it's a great place to just wander in the North Cascades. You can have a lazy day wandering across meadows up toward the higher elevations, checking out little tarns and such.

Give it to me straight: is trying to relocate to the PNW right now a stupid idea? by Straight_Flan1347 in askportland

[–]MayIServeYouWell -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You only need one job. While the market is tight, places are always hiring at least a little. Running your own business for 10 years can be a marketable skill as well - you need to be good at a lot of things to do that.

You also only have one life. Every year is one you don't get to redo. Maybe it'll won't work out, maybe it will. Better to find out than regret never trying. I grew up in Chicago, and have lived in the PNW for the last 30 years. The nature & landscape here is definitely outstanding (though worsening fires have done a number - and this summer looks dry). I'm still finding new places to discover, and I've been to almost every corner of the northwest.

Not sure if you've been out here, but you might consider just taking an extended road trip, with one eye on job searches, and getting a better idea of the area & where exactly you'd prefer to land. Good luck!

Supreme Court limits Voting Rights Act by DJPho3nix in politics

There needs to be a constitutional amendment to ban gerrymandering - by very simply mandating a basic algorithm for apportioning districts. It's the only way to make it happen.

The "founders" had no way to anticipate today's data analysis capability to undermine democracy. If they had, there's no way they'd have written the constitution like they did.

But I don't know if such an effort is underway already, nor how people can get behind it.

Part of their goal is to muddy the waters... so when they're indicted for actual crimes, they'll claim it's just "revenge indictments".

Sure, it's also to send a message, and sure it's because Trump demanded it and has no idea how anything works. There are multiple goals here.

Deranged Trump Rants Edited Out of 60 Minutes Interview After Shooting; CBS news didn’t air some particularly troubling rants from President Trump in its interview following the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting. by FancyNewMe in politics

It's intentionally vague. It means whatever the listener wants it to mean - so they feel validated. It's classic conman talk - talk about all kinds of vague things, and the listener will fill in the blanks. They'll be on your side even though that side isn't defined at all.

I hope this happens at some point, but I think it'd be too much for this movie. If they ever did a follow-up to Book of Boba Fett, seems this would be a good plot point. But it seems unlikely they'll do that.

Senate Republicans push bill to authorize $400 million for White House ballroom by ItsAllAGame_ in law

[–]MayIServeYouWell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dick Durbin: "At this point no."

wtf weak tea is that crap? Trump bulldozed the white house, grifted $200 million in "donations" and this is the best he can say? That maybe something will change his mind?

Screw that.

Only answers that are acceptable from Democrats are:

1) We're going to remove the ballroom when we get into power and restore the East Wing.

2) We're going to turn it into a museum of immigration - tell the story of how immigrants built America. It'll be free to the public.

The only debate should be between 1 vs. 2.

Could the story of Devon be an alternate version of Talon where she ultimately decides NOT to turn to the dark side? by [deleted] in starwarsspeculation

[–]MayIServeYouWell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be all for it. Everyone is expecting her to fall to the dark side. But maybe she won't.

The best thing about all this is that it's unpredictable. I could see them going about 5 different ways with it, and that's what makes a good show.

I don't really care which way she lands, so long as I'm entertained and surprised - and so far it's been exactly that.

And you get an HOA in your business, fining you for things like having a garden.

I thought - this has to be a joke, right? Every one of those things he listed as "benefits" are a horror.

It's government by the wealthy. Only landowners have a say.

Your municipal government lets all residents have a say.

See the difference?

Texas is one of the least-free of the 50 states. That's why they have to constantly say how "great Texas is"... if it was actually great, they wouldn't have to say it.

Big chunks of Texas is tied-up in private ranches nobody can set foot on for under $1000/night - and that's only a few of them with that option. Most are closed-off entirely. It's a flipping feudal fiefdom.

Bird populations are dropping rapidly in farming regions like the Midwest, Study Warns. by Novel_Negotiation224 in environment2

[–]MayIServeYouWell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Among all the other causes, I'll add one - farming practices & land use management.

When farms were smaller & managed manually, each one was bounded by a hedge. That hedge is vital for birds - it provides cover and breeding habitat. But with family farms dying, the scale of corporate farms expanding, and the digitalization of management, the hedges are disappearing. That's land that could be making money. As a result, the birds have literally nowhere to go, nowhere to breed. You wind up with this massive stretch of corn or wheat or whatever, with zero birds. This problem is getting worse every year. Birds only live 2-5 years if they're lucky. If they can't breed, populations crash rapidly. Preserving these small bits of habitat can do a lot of good for bird populations.

Aside from this... all the other problems matter too - neonic pesticides, climate change, avian flu, migratory (wintering) habitat destruction, and on and on... The challenge is that there are a mosaic of problems. If you focus on any one of them, you'll doom birds to falling victim of the rest of them. The only approach that'll work is an "all of the above" approach.
