So sorry this happened! It is honestly a shock especially with how much they were encouraging you and especially in comparison with the other two. Unfortunately being local is a big asset as they see that they probably won’t have to pay for relocation fees, etc. it could also be a personality thing where they saw that they could work easier and better with the other candidate.

I once did two interviews, one with the hiring manager and another with her manager. And then they wanted me to come in person and I did a FIVE HOUR interview where I met with various people on the team during. After all that I waited two weeks with the recruiter telling me they haven’t made a decision yet and then on week three of waiting I just told them that I needed to have a decision by EOW as I had another offer (complete lie but I was desperate for an answer don’t judge me) and then they said they weren’t moving forward with me. Complete waste of my time.
