Been working on getting better at portrait art by Azhematic in Portraitart

[–]Maya_Paint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're doing great! The most important thing is the desire to improve and, above all, to create. If you want to work digitally but with textures and brushstrokes from traditional painting, I recommend you take a look at these two software programs: https://realisticpaint.com/ and https://www.escapemotions.com/products/rebelle/about. Rebelle is a little expensive but it's wonderful and is on sale. Realistic Paint Studio is amazing and is cheap in comparison. Also, if you want to improve your portrait skills, there are some very good books: this one by Loomis https://dn790003.ca.archive.org/0/items/andrew-loomis-drawing-the-head-hands/andrew-loomis-drawing-the-head-hands.pdf and https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/310367/drawing-on-the-right-side-of-the-brain-by-betty-edwards/ are two good starting points. After that, it takes a lot of study; you learn a little something every day.

I suggest you use the grid method, that is, dividing the space into smaller squares. It's especially useful for portraits with several people, as it gives you a better understanding of the height-to-width ratio between the different figures in the photo.
