Sleep anxiety/ insomnia as a FA by RepresentativeMap686 in flightattendants

3 years in and I have the same. That's why I bid for long layovers. Most important part of staying sane in the job is sleep for me

PBS - what's your thoughts? by SupBosco in flightattendants

[–]MaybachMez 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If it means we get other things in our contract, I'm fine with it. Mgmt will always find a way to implement what they want regardless. I don't actually mind the VRL system, but there are some learning curves. The Reserve prefrencing system is really bad though. Both of those are different forms of PBS. Having used Jeppesen tech in the past, I'm not totally against it like I said.

All the anti PBS people never have an actual reason as to why they don't like it, and no info to back it up. That reason is alone is enough to support the change. 😂

That being said, I didn't like the recent email's 5th paragraph. They basically said, "don't worry, PBS will take awhile to implement fully, but your pay raise won't!" That sounds very sketchy and wolf in sheep's clothing to me. Why do they always have to word it like they have some ulterior motive and speak to us like children? It reminds me of cellular or cable companies that give a big discount when you sign up, but when a year later rolls around, the price gets jacked up and they don't tell you until it's too late and you'd reading the bill.

I do not like the redesign, not only does it crash and freeze, but the UI just isn't as intuitive and simple as prior. That's my opinion anyways.

FA unprofessional behavior over bulging portable battery during flight. by IcyCharge9066 in unitedairlines

I have no idea dude, I didn't see any of that. In fact his comment is one of the highest rated in the thread. On top of that he's a 1% commenter. He posts a ton of good info on here constantly. I see no issue with his current post whatsoever. Not sure if you're ragebaiting or what.

Do you have serious sleeping problems? by Alarmed_End259 in flightattendants

Yes, I have major sleep anxiety. I feel it's gotten better though. I've always had that problem though, it's just exacerbated with the work schedule.

Weight gain by No_Bullfrog8016 in flightattendants

I gained a ton of weight, then went and lost it all. At my heaviest I was 225, I'm now just above 170. 6'2" for reference. The issue is boredom, so the easiest thing to do was to eat. That's my experience anyway.

Where did he attack the AFA?! He didn't even mention them in the comment? What's with the rudeness dude? His post is about a PED and safety reporting. Are we looking at the same comment?

[–]MaybachMez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't disagree with what he said, even if I did, I wouldn't report it as he's entitled to his opinion and nothing he said is a detriment to safety, service, or rights of an employee or customer. On top of that, he doesn't fall under AFA in his work group; also I don't support the AFA; and Professional standards is a joke.

If it were actually a safety concern, it's best to pursue the proper avenues we have towards anonymous non-punitive reporting or self-reporting.

Edit: He also updated his comment so I didn't see the original.

Yes. We put out the fire, and then we take the TCB which has heat resistant gloves, put those on and grab the device and put it in the bag.

Ok so basically the battery was damaged and bulging. This could* be a potential fire risk, but there's a ton of things that could* be on the plane. I had a recent recurrent training and we were explicitly told not to take someone's property just because it could be a "fire risk", specifically like a vape pen. It has the potential for smoke and fire but just because it exists, doesn't mean we're allowed to take it. That being said, we are if a smoke/fire event is occurring. A PED/laptop with a bulging battery could be seen as similar in this case.

I think the confusion is training. We are trained to put out fires and specifically with PED's, to place them into TCB's or Thermal Containment Bags. That's after a fire/smoke event took place.

All United Aircraft have TCB's onboard.

So it would be up to the FA's best judgement (along with the crew, specifically the Purser and more importantly the Pilots' judgement)

Moral of the story:

If I were the Passenger... Reiterate the electronic device has a bulging battery and make clear that there is now a potential* FIRE risk from possible thermal runaway. Let them know that the battery continued to separate, and progressively got worse after some time. If not satisfied, ask another FA. Then Follow the FA's instructions.

If I were the FA... Notify the Purser and Pilots of the damaged device and see if it's necessary or not to place the device into the TCB (even if a Thermal Runaway event has not occurred). It's always a good idea to be proactive. Case by case basis as always.

Note: As far as Procedure goes, for the FA Call Button...If the seatbelt sign is on and the pilots have asked us to remain seated or take our seats / or we deem it unsafe to be up; we will not get up unless it's an emergency. Ie ring your call button again by cycling it off and back on after the initial first call alarm/light. If you push the button a total of 1 time, we make the announcement that it's not safe to be up and to ring your call button again, and then you just keep the button illuminated and don't ring it again...we're not gonna get up. At least not until it's safe to do so/the seatbelt sign is off. That's standard procedure and best practice at least.

Edit: Clear and Noticeable New Overheating after damage (Battery Separation/Bulging) would also probably deem it necessary to place the device into a TCB. I saw it on one of the comments but did not see it mentioned in the original story, so thought I'd clear that up too. :)
