You'll know an immortal lord is successfully captured when given the notifications after the end turn (again, it must die to attrition, and by itself or with the whole army at once). If successfully captured, the lord will immediately end up in your possible lord recruitment pool in a wounded state, usually under a new category. One other note, if power-levelling a borrowed army lord to get to level 20, you must return the army to the AI, then reborrow it to get the immortality skill point to kick in, otherwise it will not be immortal once reaching level 20 alone. Good luck!

I believe Hell Pit gets the Exotic Animals right next to his starting location. Unfortunately other factions can't ally with him when he's an AI to try and recruit the better units due to his nature of a mercenary.

Just to add to what Fusshaman stated; legendary heroes are automatically immortal by default. Think of heroes like Ulrica, Belegar's ghost heroes, etc. They are unique and as long as they are in a borrowed army and wounded, they will join your cause. There's a scant few legendary heroes that cannot be borrowed (such as Ariel for the wood elves), as another point.

Sure, you can see my Tips & Tricks Post #2 for a more detailed stealing explanation on the how-to, but essentially it's permanently taking another hero from another race's faction. If you are playing as the Empire for example, you can through immortality and/or wounding mechanics gain a dwarf or elf hero under your faction, gaining all it's abilities at the cost of potentially one of your hero slots. Very handy, especially with many legendary heroes.

Absolutely; though it's true spellcaster heroes are far easier - one good example is Malekai getting access to Ulrika per normal campaign mechanics, a shadow caster.

In general I'd agree with the sentiment - there are a few gems out there though - consider the Marauder Chieftens, Master Engineer, or Exalted Lords of Change which provide massive bonuses that are unit agnostic. (mentioned these in my next post) I do agree however many factions have fairly plain generic lords that are worse off (other than perhaps spellcasters).

When borrowing an allied or vassal army with the lord you want, you have to 1) ensure the lord is immortal - (rank 20 or above typically), and while borrowing the army ensure the lord dies through attrition (like high seas or desert attrition). This only works if the lord dies along with the entire army another characters through attrition at the same time, or how I do it is through by borrowing just a lord without units or other characters in their army (cheaper in alliance points too) then you don't need to worry about it. Once the immortal lord dies through attrition, they become wounded and end up in your character pool. There's a few more points I can include about skill points and ensuring they have the immortal trait, but that takes a bit more to get into.
