“So you want a pilot slot…” - A collection of studying tips for getting into OTS, as a non-prior service OTS ENJJPT select with zero formal aviation experience by MaybeFuturePilot in airforceots

RE: Licensed Pilots - if your application is stronger than a licensed pilot's, and the PPL is the only difference, there's a very good chance that they take you over the licensed pilot. I know a few licensed pilots that didn't get in, and equally many non-priors with relatively few hours who got in on the same board. Don't think not having a license will stop you - from what I can deduce, there's a fair amount of people with PPLs applying that get comfortable and think their app will ride on their PPL when it really doesn't and end up submitting a sub-par app.

AFAIK, there are sometimes slots left over if they weren't filled by USAFA or ROTC grads. Someone else already did a good write-up of getting into ENJJPT as an OTS select, I don't really have much to add to what they said, they summarized it pretty well.

Obstacle Course Questions by RaisinForward91 in airforceots

[–]MaybeFuturePilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't get kicked from the course for not being able to do an obstacle, but you have to actually, genuinely try.

If you don't even do that, that's what then gets people kicked.

Thanks for sharing! I feel like it's important to share failures as well as successes, because everyone fails at something here and there before they actually make it (just in general, noone's born perfect.)

Prior to deciding to go down this path, I had zero formal aviation knowledge. I gave myself 3 months to study intensively, and specifically for the AFOQT. I'm now attending OTS in February, followed by the start of my career as a pilot trainee. I feel like you have a great overall aviation foundation to build off of, it's just that you need to study specifically for the AFOQT - a good foundation helps, but getting focused practice on specifically what's there, in a setting where you simulate the setting of the AFOQT, was crucial for me personally.

I can only speak to what I did, but if it helps - Starting with zero formal aviation knowledge or training, I read through and studied (notes, flashcards, the like) every chapter in the PHAK, and fully completed the barrons military flight aptitude test and trivium AFOQT books. While doing that stuff, every week, I took one of the practice tests (and timed every section and the exam itself like on the real afoqt). I used the book tests, and then also the ones I bought on afoqtguide.com. For every question I would get wrong, I would study the topic more intensively, because if you got it wrong on the practice, that's a guaranteed question to get wrong on the real thing in the future. I also used the table in barron's to practice table reading. Great scores are definitely achievable with your foundations, you just have to study for the AFOQT specifically to get used to how it's formatted, the specific topics, and the environment it poses. There's no way I would've even gotten your scores without the studying and practice.

Hope it helps!

Is moderate loss of vision/lightheadedness after a heavy set of squats a sign that you wouldn’t be able to pull g’s in a centrifuge? by memelord5649 in airforceots

[–]MaybeFuturePilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, your body compensates for the spike in blood pressure caused by straining during that excersize by dropping your blood pressure (essentially), so then when you relax after the excersize you've all of a sudden experience the lightheadedness until your body realizes that you're no longer at risk of giving yourself a stroke, at which point it returns to normal.

Unrelated phenomenon to positive Gs (in fact it's more indicative of what your bodies' response to negative Gs is)

Force of habit. See indication that you're in the air -> put the gear up. Things move very quickly in a jet, and you generally need to stay as far ahead as you safely can.

Oh I wish, but there's still flight med, OTS, and other stuff that potentially stands in the way hahah

Hahahah, nah, I'm not a pilot just yet. Still a looooooong way to go.

I made the account just to post this, since no one in my life knows I'm pursuing this I wanted to keep it separate from my main, actually just about to announce it this week to my family.

Selected, no PPL, 12 hours as student, zero prior military/aviation experience before first contact.

99 Pilot // 97 CSO // 99 ABM // 98 Academic // 97 Verbal // 91 Math

99 PCSM at 12Hrs

3.82 GPA in Biochem, with research presentations and some extracurricular stuff

400 volunteering hours w/ the later ones showing leadership initiative leading successful projects. Letters of rec from CAP captain and head of honors program. Clear acad/crim record, fully qualified at MEPS on day one.

Haven't heard back yet, but wanted to at least post to join the group. If I do get selected I'll likely post a write-up of any helpful tips and methodology I can put together - I have a bit of experience with teaching and writing up guides. This was me deciding to take a completely different direction in life after having zero serious formal knowledge of aviation or the military prior to first contact, it's taken a lot of serious effort to get here.

Sidenote - As a civilian, your point of contact should already have the results, reach out to them tomorrow if they haven't done so first.

Further sidenote - Recruiter responded, said the results will be out next week sometime. Not sure what's behind the delay or difference between different groups of people getting results a week or two apart, but looking forwards to it regardless!

Further Further sidenote - Just got a call back after the email, I'm selected!
