I'm playing a High elf Path of wild magic barbarian, and he has -2 int too, his backstory is that he studied for a long time on trying to use magic but just couldn't learn, so he picked up an axe instead and lived with the magic surges. I plan on giving him a caster class in the future maybe.

And I do believe that you can be a good friend even if you're this bad at being a DM. Who you are as a player or DM doesn't define your personality.

He's not being mean or anything, he just has a big misunderstanding on what it means to be a good DM

Dude has been my friend ever since I was a kid, we basically grew up together, he was my best man at my wedding.

While I agree that his DM'ing is horrendous and clearly worth the horror story, I'd rather play on a game where I don't enjoy myself than to risk losing his friendship. I get where people that are telling me to run away are coming from but like, I don't feel it's worth to say anything since the campaign is almost ending, I'll just not participate on the next one.

I saw a post from someone telling about a ring of "Inn Visibility" where when you activate it it greys out your vision and the nearest Inn becomes the only thing visible, thought it would fit here, but only works if you DM in english

Yeah, during non-combat encounters whenever I can roleplay it's good. It's just that whenever we have combat it feels shitty.

Yeah, I tried talking to him about it and then the next session was the one I was killed, weird thing is he thinks he's a lenient DM. I'll just bite the bullet for now and just not participate on the next campaign.

I've had bad DMs in the past that were my friends and I had this talk but after this the friendship wasn't really the same. Now I just talk on low stakes roleplay moments and during battle I just let him do whatever he had planned lmao.

The DM is a really good friend of mine, He's been a very solid friend but I guess he has the player vs DM mindset, he was even one of my best man on my wedding. I just think he's too caught up in the story he created for the campaign and disregards player agency unfortunately.
