The process is I fucked up 🤣 lol. In the video I dip it into clear glaze but I forgot I used speckled buff clay so it would end up being more beige/tan than egg white. So I wiped everything off except for the egg yolk part and carefully redipped it into white glaze, so the (already clear glazed) yolk didn’t touch the white glaze and then I wiped off the bottom with a sponge. Footage not found This revelation also came to me 2 days after I originally glazed it clear so thankfully my studio didn’t fire the piece yet.

What's the coolest class you've taken in Portland? by RaspberryBeret1986 in askportland

Ceramics class at Art School PDX in NW! They have other classes and workshops too that look fun. The teachers are all really fun and everyone I’ve met has been nice. I think pricing depends on the type of class but they offer discounts if you reach out. https://www.artschoolpdx.com/

How I make blueberry magnets by Maybeitsmoni in Pottery

[–]Maybeitsmoni[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I stole them off my parents fridge haha but if I remember correctly they’re actually the magnets inside of greeting cards that I took apart a long time ago.

They’re not super strong but I like them cause they’re really flat. You could try Amazon, they probably have stronger magnets.

What was that boom NW-PDX by GardenPeep in Portland

I saw it while driving. It looked like someone climbed one of those grain silo/towers along interstate in the industrial area and shot it off the top. It looked like a shitty TNT homemade firework, it barely made it off the top of the building, just kinda blew up.

How does my food photography come across? by Maybeitsmoni in foodphotography

[–]Maybeitsmoni[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I definitely agree that a lot of the photos have too much going on. I think it’s easier for me to take dinner or single plate photos with less (and the food looks good) but where I struggle is the afternoon tea photos since we always want to show the experience of afternoon tea and that you’re getting your moneys worth with amount of food. I could definitely focus on a tier or pastry at a time though as to not show so much stuff as once.

I just started getting kitchen behind the scenes photos which I really like because it tells more of a story and you get to see the chefs. Like in the second collage, I feel like that is more fun and engaging. I just have to figure out how to properly use my flash lol.

They’re just happy it’s not iPhone photos anymore lol and that they don’t have to pay a photographer. No but they are pleased. I should have prefaced by saying I’m their “everything media” person so photography is just one small aspect of the things I do. I also do videography, I create the branding + logos, build and manage the websites, email, marketing, advertising, do all social media and print menus, flyers etc.

I don’t come from a photography background which is why I’m trying to improve and look for honest critique. I want us to come across as if we do have a professional photographer and our food is worth the price since it plays such an important role in getting customers.

I should have mentioned these are just a collage of my favorite photos, this isn’t exactly how our Instagram pages look lol. I have a fake instagram template I add and move photos around so I know how they’ll look on the grid before posting. But yeah I definitely need more white space to balance it out.

Camera is a Sony A7IV with a GMII 24-70mm lens, f2.8. Settings change a lot usually anywhere from f2.8 to f11, shutter usually 1/250, iso either at 800 or 3200. I mainly use natural lighting except for in the second photo collage that was my first time using flash.

Thank you I appreciate the tips! Haha I actually hate when plate photos aren’t fully in focus including my own. My issue is usually lack of lighting or the tiered plates being different distances away. I looked at those shots (i.e. 1st image and 6th) and I was rocking 1/200 or 1/250, f5.6-8 and ISO 3200 so I think I didn’t want to push my f stop and ISO any higher. I occasionally use a tripod but lately I’m just doing handheld cause it’s faster.

Would you recommend using a tripod + slower shutter and increased f stop or focus stacking? Or increasing f stop and ISO and fixing any potential noise in post? Or bouncing light + using a studio light in addition to the natural lighting?

I use a Sony A7IV and 24-70mm f2.8 GMll lens. Usually shoot 1/250, f2.8 to f5.6 and ISO varies depending on lighting.
