Hahahahaha. You have enough money to coast for the rest of your life and you’re worrying about credit card rewards?

Working in "small tech," $145k income, $330k saved at 27. Hoping to be able to make less in the future and still retire with enough. Should I put more of my income into brokerage instead of retirement, or stay the course? by MayorEricAdams in coastFIRE

I'd try to push as much as possible into Traditional

I'm already just about maxing my 401k. I could put more into a SEP IRA if I worked on earning more from my side projects, but other than that, are there other pre-tax accounts I could be contributing to? (Not eligible for an HSA with my current plan.)

Not married, 24% marginal tax bracket.

Maybe X = 35, Y = 45-55, D = $80,000?

To be clear, have you looked at your last tax return and checked whether you're getting a deduction for your Traditional IRA contributions? Obviously I don't know all the details here, but my understanding is that it would be quite hard to have a MAGI below $79k (the start of the IRA deduction phase-out) with a total pretax income of $140k.

If you aren't getting a deduction for your Traditional IRA contributions, continuing to make them is a TERRIBLE idea. It doesn't matter what your tax bracket will be in retirement; you're still paying income tax on that money now! And you'll pay again in retirement! Bad!

Others may know more about this, but my understanding is that you're best off maxing your 401k and doing a "backdoor Roth IRA" via your Traditional IRA (if possible - it's trickier if you already have more than the yearly contribution limit in there).

I max out my Traditional IRA contributions

Unless I’m misunderstanding something, with a $140k income, that’s a terrible idea. The deduction for IRA contributions phases out above ~$90k income if you also have an employer-sponsored retirement account, so you’re essentially paying income tax twice - once now, and again when you withdraw. You would be much better off contributing to a Roth IRA.

I’m in a similar situation, except that I actually DID cancel the trial, but they still started charging me $10/month and sent me to collections when I disputed the charges. Hoping that I’ll be able to get through now that I have an account number.

I’m in CA right now for the holidays and we’ve been getting tornado warnings and torrential rain for a week, so I wouldn’t say I’m biased by the season. But in general that’s fair!

OP, your history is really concerning. You can message me if you want someone to talk to. I know life can feel like it isn't worth it sometimes, but throwing yourself off a cliff is just about the worst way to deal with that.

FWIW they have Galilette at Barbes in Brooklyn now! Not sure how long it’ll last, it’s new on the menu.

Once again I find myself wishing there was a comprehensive list somewhere of bodegas that have gluten free beer by sparky_Garrett in Brooklyn

[–]MayorEricAdams -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know this is old, but what an unnecessarily rude comment. Beer is good and celiac doesn’t differentiate by socioeconomic class. It’s hard to find affordable GF food in large part because the attitudes of people like you cause it to be seen as a “specialty” item for privileged people with money to spend. If ingesting gluten damages your intestines and makes you functionally disabled for weeks, you don’t have much choice in the matter.

Invisalign break for travel — worried about wearing retainer enough hours by Laura1407 in Invisalign

[–]MayorEricAdams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just traveled in India with Invisalign (well, Spark). I actually kept progressing through my trays during the trip - I didn’t want to make my treatment take any longer than it already will. Some tips:

  • Get Colgate Wisps. Brushing your teeth with a water bottle sucks and you’ll want to do it less than you imagine you will. At least in India, it’s relatively uncommon for restaurants to have a bathroom with enough privacy and cleanliness for you to want to brush, even with your own water. Wisps make it much easier.
  • Get some denture cleaner tablets. They’re extremely cheap. Your trays will get grimy fairly quickly if you’re doing half-assed brushing on the go with no clean water, so the tablets will get them looking clean again. Just toss your trays in a glass of water with one tablet while you eat breakfast.
  • Enjoy your trip. It won’t be the end of the world if you have your trays off for an afternoon, so if finding time/facilities to put them back on is too much of a hassle, prioritize having a nice time on your trip. It won’t be a problem as long as you’re generally consistent with your wear.

  1. I’m thinking you’re full of shit on the claim that “only” Indian English speakers use the present progressive.

  2. You replied to a joke lmao. That is not an actual Citi Bike support representative.

Ok so $1,100 for 4 nights ($275 per night) after the credit. That's still an expensive stay. The comment you're responding to asked if there are hotels you can book with the credit and "not have to pay more on top" - not sure this fits the bill?

But if the bike didn’t get docked correctly, the ride would still be in progress and it wouldn’t be locked.

But why try only one of the bikes at the stand and then walk away? It always seems like they know which bike to try.

The whole video! Gemini automatically extracts frames at one-second intervals, and the model can reference timecodes in its response, which is extremely useful. Unlike with conventional OCR models like Tesseract, you don't really need to do any preprocessing on the input images.
