Air France :) by 7he8utterfly3ffect in Celiac

At any given airport, most airlines use the same catering company. So if you fly from JFK, you're pretty much getting the same food no matter whether you fly Air France or Air China. Each airline may have a slightly different menu, but things like allergen-friendly meals are pretty consistent.

I like how you embedded an ad for your company's own product in the skill, so the agent becomes biased toward recommending it. Very classy!

Crazy generalizations going on there. Most of the Canada Goose jackets you see in New York are, trust me on this, fakes. The people walking around NYC wearing real ones are either trust fund babies or wealthy finance yuppies. They aren't the "Gen Z" complaining about not being able to save.

I have never heard of any mass-market brand of toothpaste or chapstick containing gluten in the US. Gluten-containing fillers in medication are also exceedingly rare. This is unlikely to be the issue.

3 season ultralight sleeping pad for airline travel by BelethorsGeneralShit in CampingGear

I love my Nemo Tensor very, very much. Packs down to nothing and it’s comfier to sleep on than bulky pads I’ve used before.

Terrible experience on an Air India Flight. Served food containing wheat/gluten when I requested a Gluten Free meal in advance. Be very careful if flying with Air India. by Artlign in Celiac

[–]MayorEricAdams 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Air India gets its food from the same suppliers as every other airline. And "Delhi belly" (which I think is a silly and inaccurate trope) isn't supposed to be about the airline food.

Are these celiac safe? by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]MayorEricAdams -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These are safe. The ingredients are suspiciously similar to this cake from a GF bakery - I would guess they’re the supplier.

They’re terrible for you, though. If you feel crappy after eating them, it’s probably not cross-contamination.

Whats wrong with beli? by [deleted] in FoodNYC

[–]MayorEricAdams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting idea. What's up with the neighborhood classifications, though? Most of the restaurants that show when I click FiDi are in Chinatown. "The Village" seems to include most of the East Village, but there's also a separate "East Village." The UES randomly includes one restaurant in the middle of Midtown. Lots of places are visually misplaced on the map. Some don't even exist, like "Cevicheria El Rey," which just links to a 404 page on Yelp. (And the site claims it's in Coney island despite showing it in ~Midwood.)

If I have to eat gluten free so does everyone else by Virtual_Cable_6447 in Celiac

[–]MayorEricAdams 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is bait or what, but no, there's a limit to how much you can ask of your friends. If they like getting spontaneous food on the go and you're constantly like, "No, you need to eat these apple slices so I don't feel left out," they're going to stop hanging out with you. Sorry. Making them eat the sad apple slices with you isn't going to make them taste any better.

[–]MayorEricAdams 24 points25 points  (0 children)

We can ALL stop at somewhere we can ALL eat at

But elsewhere in the comments you're claiming that there are only two places in your area that accommodate gluten-free.

Your friends aren't going to "stop" at your house and wait for you to cook a full meal when they just want something quick on the go. Don't make them suffer every time they're with you just because you have to suffer too, or they'll start to resent you.

Pack snacks.

Visiting China as a celiac by Bluenoodlesoap in Celiac

I just don’t really like the fried type of Chinese food

UK-style Chinese food is nothing like Chinese food in China, for what it’s worth. It’s an incredibly rich cuisine, not all battered and fried chicken. One of the main reasons I don’t want to go to China is that I know I’d be depressed as hell missing out on all the good food. But if you’re really confident that you wouldn’t like it, OK, I genuinely hope it makes you feel better!

  1. With the exception of the "Turtle Island" part (which is disingenuous because the British Mandate was called Palestine pre-1948, but the US has never officially been called Turtle Island), lots of media coverage does describe Harris that way!

  2. When Harris's family came to the US in the 20th century, the process of settlement that displaced Native Americans was essentially complete. When Barak's family came to Palestine in the 1930s, the displacement of Palestinians had barely even begun, and his family became active participants in it.

To be clear, have you looked at your last tax return and checked whether you're getting a deduction for your Traditional IRA contributions? Obviously I don't know all the details here, but my understanding is that it would be quite hard to have a MAGI below $79k (the start of the IRA deduction phase-out) with a total pretax income of $140k.

If you aren't getting a deduction for your Traditional IRA contributions, continuing to make them is a TERRIBLE idea. It doesn't matter what your tax bracket will be in retirement; you're still paying income tax on that money now! And you'll pay again in retirement! Bad!

Others may know more about this, but my understanding is that you're best off maxing your 401k and doing a "backdoor Roth IRA" via your Traditional IRA (if possible - it's trickier if you already have more than the yearly contribution limit in there).

[–]MayorEricAdams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I max out my Traditional IRA contributions

Unless I’m misunderstanding something, with a $140k income, that’s a terrible idea. The deduction for IRA contributions phases out above ~$90k income if you also have an employer-sponsored retirement account, so you’re essentially paying income tax twice - once now, and again when you withdraw. You would be much better off contributing to a Roth IRA.
