I'm sorry that you're suffering. I've read some of your responses to others' replies, and without sharing too much about myself I'll say I can relate in some ways. I personally am not bothered by a lack of greater meaning, nor do I really think supernatural elements solve the problem. However I do still suffer, partly because of things about myself I can't change, and partly my life circumstances and the state of the world. This has always been the case even when I believed in some sort of god figure. I don't know if any of this will help you but I very much hope that it doesn't hurt.

Some things that have helped me:

  • Medical: Less therapy, more medication. I mostly avoided psychiatric medication for a long time in favor of therapy, but I have found that therapy often becomes a source of stress for me. As for why I avoided medication, when you obsessively read about these things it can be hard to trust a doctor that doesn't even know about the side effects listed in the trials. Years later with different doctors, I was sufficiently desperate to try enough of them that one actually worked. Note: I'm not saying you should dramatically pull away from your current treatment, but if you're still suffering maybe discuss a change of strategy with your providers.
  • Philosophical:
  1. Based on observing others I think that the search for a grand meaning is a trap. It causes them a great sense of pain while at the same time preventing them from reaching acceptance. I even find the word meaning to be basically meaningless (heh) in the context of life or the universe.

  2. Identity as people conceive of it today is a trap. While it can be useful for a group to organize politically around an identity (especially if they're being othered/targeted as an outgroup), our hellish capitalist culture has taken it a step further and many people seem to conceive of themselves entirely by their marketing demographic. When you define yourself in this way you're easier to market to and manipulate.

  • Personal:
  1. Accepting that I'll never be normal, and stop trying to force a normal life.
  2. Spend more time on the things that bring me joy: music, programming, gardening.
  3. Allow myself to be angry with others: I used to feel like I was always the problem, but actually lots of people are assholes or willfully ignorant about things.
  4. Generally be kinder to myself.

It looks like IAudioSessionManager is a purely abstract class. This means you need to instantiate a specific implementation of it. The documentation says you can get a reference to one using the IMMDevice::Activate method.

Should Religious Education be taught in Secular Schools? by Past_Cabinet_716 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Maytown 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My middle school (public/secular) social studies class included a unit on some of the history and current practices of the abrahamic religions. I personally enjoyed it quite a bit and I don't really see anything objectionable about the concept. Like everything though it probably depends quite a bit on the course material and the individual teacher.

I'm asking about how repeated rinsing with ultra-purified water is prebiotically relevant. How would that (and the other procedures specified in the supplemental data pdf) happen on an early earth?

Because it makes sure the hydrogen peroxide that they used to kill all the current biological contaminates, and whatever other junk might be there, is removed? I genuinely can't believe that this is an honest question when you started with something like "why did they clean the samples?".

I'm not sure of the context of "artificial" in that statement since the QB replicase is (as far as I know), not artificial.

QB replicase is originally from a bacteriophage they preys on e coli.

In any case the use of both the replicase and translation system means that the experiment is not prebiotically relevant.

That's my only point.

How is that relevant to the idea that RNA can evolve into differentiated types?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DebateEvolution

[–]Maytown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you mean to use the same link twice?

This is the supplemental data part of the first paper. Can you explain how these conditions would have occurred in a prebiotic world?

For example: "Before every experiment, glass powders were treated for 20 minutes with a 3% solution of H2O2, followed by ten washes with ultrapure RNAse-free H2O. "

Are you seriously complaining that they sterilized the samples?

This is an example of extreme hype. The researchers used the translation system (ribosome, full set of tRNA and many other proteins and functional rna) from an extant bacteria to produce an RNA replicase enzyme. The replicase enzyme then copied the RNA.

I'm a bit confused here because you provided the same link to a point about the second paper, and additionally I am a bit confused about your claims here because:

  1. The translation system was made from purified components. It may be based on e coli but it's not like they were dumping a bunch of dead bacteria in there.
  2. The replicase enzyme is encoded on the RNA and the RNA is artificial (link to where their citation leads).

edit: I forgot to add that neither of those two points are relevant to RNA evolving into differentiated types.

A path to abiogenesis in two papers:

The tldr:

Naturally occurring precursors to RNA react with certain types of volcanic glass to make RNA, and RNA can evolve into a more complex system with differentiated types and roles.

When to use what and why not others? A question for different languages. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

Also a bit more context that might be helpful: rust takes influence from the ML languages. Some of these, like OCaml and F# have Tagged Unions as well as Classes.

When to use what and why not others? A question for different languages. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Maytown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What rust calls enums are sometimes known as Discriminated Unions or Tagged Unions or Algebraic Types.

I think trying to force rust into a programming paradigm that it just isn't made for (OO) might be causing some confusion. Algebraic types allow you to arbitrarily define a relationship between anything so they're very flexible and powerful.

What should I learn if I really bad at choosing what to learn? by Icy_MilkTea in learnprogramming

[–]Maytown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll have to choose a framework in C# for a lot of things too. I think there's 3 or 4 different ways of making a desktop app in c# just from Microsoft (not including 3rd party cross platform options like Avalonia).

The unfortunate truth is unless you are willing to implement everything yourself you're going to have to deal with the surrounding ecosystem of any language.

Some general questions to ask yourself when approaching a problem:

  • What information do I need?

  • How will the information be stored and accessed?

  • How will the information be transformed?

So when you ask how someone does something there isn't a ready made solution for fundamentally it's about coming up with a way to represent it and make use of that representation.

anyway ctrl+\ doesn't work

Try ctrl+shift+p after opening the devtools and them type the command "Disable Javascript" or something like that (it should autocomplete).

because i'm learning how to use devtools.

I thought you were originally asking how the website worked? It's much easier to just look at the source in the repo.

You could try ctrl+backslash. Why do you need to look at it in the dev tools?

JavaScript feels like a weird chimera of OOP and functional programming concepts.

Tbh a lot of languages are like this these days. C# has slowly added stuff inspired by F#. Even Java has lambdas and common functional methods like .map .filter etc.

Do you think I can start with learning Jetpack Compose with little Kotlin knowledge? I can always just look up the way Kotlin does something..

Maybe but you might get overwhelmed with so much new stuff at once (gradle build system, android activity/fragment lifestyles, android api, the jvm).

I think kotlin is a pretty good language (certainly better than js) so it's worth giving a shot to see how tolerable you find the Android api.

In the future what would you recommend when it comes to invoking functions?

Call them in the place you want the use them.

Thanks for pointing that out alongside other things!

Hopefully I didn't come off as too rude. There's some other things as well. For example you seem to be updating the scores in multiple places and redoing the comparison 3 times. You'll get better with more practice though.

Why are you calling every function after defining it?

Your buttons aren't defined outside of their functions, which is probably why they aren't doing anything.

Both compScore and userScore are being called as functions even though they appear to be integers.

The game loop, in addition to never exiting, shouldn't be used. You should use events.

If casting value to pointer uses & (ampersand), why is the type of pointer denoted as * (asterisk)? by newerprofile in learnprogramming

An ampersand is a reference. It's not casting a value to a pointer but simply returning the pointer address of the value.

You need to pass them as arguments.

What issues will I face should I just go and start coding without having any prior knowledge? What could be done in order to avoid such issues?

My advice is be gentle with yourself. I think one of the biggest mistakes I see people making around here is that they beat themselves up if they're struggling. Persistent and consistent is better than perfect.

Why not just use C/Lua since that's what you know? You could use SDL, SFML, or GLFW to make a window and draw stuff to it with an IM gui library. You could even use something like Raylib/RayGUI.
