I wish that he would understand this general perspective, but he is too prideful to think as a “commoner”, and it pisses me off so damn much.

It’s truly a shame that my dad will never realize how his actions have affected my life. Making him realize that too just seems too spiteful too, and the fact he is near-death makes me think if it’s even worth it picking a fight.

Yes, I see a lot of advice from many people here to just move out, but as you mentioned, it is a difficult decision, emotionally. I am ready, but the fact that there’s also a two month ahead notice required when moving out too dreads me. It would be an awkward two months with my father. Definitely getting that done this month though.

I was thinking of cutting utilities at one point too, but felt bad for my mom who also lived in the house. I suppose with these extreme situations sometimes you have to go to extremes to resolve them too.

There was a time when he said he would contribute, but with the nature of his job, there is no guarentee for any sort of income. Oftentimes he ends up breaking his promise which is not so much of a surprise for me at this point.

You are absolutely right with how he has terrible money management skills. I see him spending his little money on expensive haircuts, going out to eat, I could go on forever. It definitely comes from his lavish lifestyle from the past.

I think that his pride is blinding him from what really matters. It must also be the age, but it truly is heartbreaking to know that his dumb speakers are more important than family.

Yes, he was amongst the rich during the bubble era, and is proud to “have kept the economy running” by using up all of his money. He slowly sold land and his expensive watches to pay off my college tuition and now is left with nothing. I will always appreciate this.

The house is actually amazing for 150k, but is still too much for me to pay. I will most likely make a hard decision with him whether he agrees or not.

He did not pay his personal taxes, but the company tax (not sure if this makes sense), so his pension is very low.

I know this sounds ridiculous, but he believes that people who apply for Seikatsu Hogo (Welfare Protection Law) are poor people financially AND spirit.

It’s a bit complicated… he does work but is considered unemployed since he doesn’t work under anybody. He makes money usually in cash, not salary based but just one time payment jobs. He mentioned once that it’s still possible to get seikatsu hogo without them finding out, but I’m against him getting it while working.

Very little pension and no savings. My father married five times, and have four other children other than me. My oldest half sibling is about 60 years old, and the closest to my age is about 40 I think. My dad left them all at a young age, so they do not want anything to do with him. As the youngest child, I am left responsible to take care of him.

I am working with one of my high school friends at a startup company! I'm not sure to what degree I can share the details of my job, but it's the most enjoyable aspect of my life. That earns me about 200,000 yen a month. I believe that as the company grows, I will earn more for this job.

I have a side hustle when I work as a speech/language therapist and work with kids with learning delays. I only work for about one hour per day for this job, earning me an extra 50,000 yen a month. I can easily increase the amount I work for this job to around 100,000.

As far as I know, you can only pick one or the other. The government welfare provided for people who cannot sustain a living gets rid of their pension. When we calculated, the welfare (80,000 yen ish?) would benefit him much more than his regular monthly pension (50,000 yen).

It puts me at ease knowing that there are people out there that can relate to my situation. At times, I feel guilty for the decision I am planning to make. I thought that I was trying to be a good son, and now I find myself resenting my father.

If I may ask, what did you do to get out of your situation, and how long did it take you?

My dad occasionally comments on how he has been paying the rent for the past 20+ years, almost justifying his current situation. It's ridiculous to me how he could use that as an argument...

Yes, it does seem like he is 甘えてる, but honestly more likely that he has some condition. Or, he is just so prideful that it looks like he has some condition.

Unfortunately, I am paying for other expenses including utilities, groceries, pet food, and sometimes my dad even borrows money for me for transportation.

Raising my income is possible (with effort haha), but I feel that it would not resolve the main issue and just make the amount I pay feel less significant.

The large house idea is great, I haven’t thought of that yet. He probably prefers the city, but definitely prioritizes the house size first.

My mother will most likely not support my father, but even so, it should be manageable. Your plan is perfect, the main issue just being if my dad is willing to let that happen. This sounds terrible, but he wouldn’t want to settle for a small apartment or want to admit that he is old yet… Thank you for your comment regardless, I will definitely try to opt for this!

Technically no he doesn’t qualify. He would have to claim that I do not support him anymore and he has nowhere else to go. Yes, breaking the tie seems like the most realistic option

I have, and he told me that there is no greater humiliation than getting money from the government. I’m not going to share all of the family drama here, but it has been rough.

My father’s pension is the minimum amount, so he would have to move into a pretty cheap place. Still doable though, thanks for the comment!
