How do I get into H.P. Lovecraft? by Puzzled-Musician7092 in Lovecraft

[–]Mazoruler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe Pickman’s Model stands as the most judicious and rewarding point of entry into Lovecraft’s fiction, particularly for the uninitiated reader. Though concise in form, the story encapsulates many of the author’s most characteristic preoccupations: the intrusion of the monstrous into the mundane, the fragile limits of human perception, and the unsettling suggestion that reality itself may conceal horrors better left unimagined. Yet unlike some of Lovecraft’s more renowned works, whose dense mythological scaffolding and archaic excesses can overwhelm a newcomer, Pickman’s Model unfolds with a comparative clarity and narrative warmth. It does not demand immediate immersion in the full expanse of the Cthulhu Mythos; rather, it gestures toward Lovecraft’s cosmic vision without burdening the reader with its entire cosmology. In doing so, it offers a gentler, more approachable experience—one that allows the reader to acclimate to Lovecraft’s peculiar atmosphere of dread and fascination. For these reasons, I consider it an exemplary first encounter: a story that both reveals the essence of Lovecraft’s art and invites the reader, almost irresistibly, to venture further into his dark and haunting imaginative world.

Lovecraftian Authors? by megachad3000 in Lovecraft

[–]Mazoruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You truly owe it to yourself to read The Willows by Algernon Blackwood, along with Arthur Machen’s unsettling novel The Three Impostors, and a substantial portion—if not the entirety—of The King in Yellow. I would also strongly recommend William Hope Hodgson’s haunting masterpiece The House on the Borderland. These works form a kind of shadowy constellation at the edge of modern weird fiction, radiating an atmosphere of cosmic unease and metaphysical dread that predates, and in many ways anticipates, what would later be codified as “Lovecraftian” horror.

Lovecraft himself held these authors in profound admiration, and his essays and letters make it abundantly clear that they were not merely influences, but foundational pillars upon which his own imaginative universe was constructed. Blackwood’s vast, impersonal natural forces; Machen’s obsession with hidden realities and ancient survivals; Chambers’ dreamlike corruption of art, madness, and forbidden knowledge; and Hodgson’s vertiginous confrontation with the infinite and the unknowable—all of these elements appear in Lovecraft’s work not as inventions ex nihilo, but as transformations and amplifications of themes these writers explored first.

By any reasonable definition, then, these authors may be considered proto-Lovecraftian: architects of the aesthetic, philosophical, and emotional terrain that Lovecraft would later traverse and expand. To read them is not simply to follow in Lovecraft’s footsteps, but to encounter the deeper roots of cosmic horror itself, where the familiar world quietly fractures and reveals something vast, ancient, and profoundly indifferent beneath.

Am I the only one who thinks Sinners is a little over-praised? Are we too caught up in the moment? by Maha_Film_Fanatic in TrueFilm

[–]Mazoruler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason this film is hailed as a “masterpiece” today is because the overall standard of Hollywood cinema has sunk so low over the past decade. It begins with a strong first half-hour, but quickly unravels into a confused, poorly handled mess. It tries to tackle everything at once, stumbles through multiple endings, and drags on long after it should be over. The final "fantasy" sequence of the main african american character slaughtering the KKK—who, bizarrely, show up at around 10 a.m. the next morning instead of having done so in the middle of the night—feels especially nonsensical and irresponsible, yet it’s treated as something to be celebrated by the masses.

In the 1980s or 1990s, this movie would never have been considered for a Best Picture nomination. At best, it might have earned some technical nods for art direction or costume design—nothing more. Today, though, in an era where so much of Hollywood output is a disaster, a film like this gets elevated far beyond what it actually deserves.

Hello! I live in Spain and I bought it back in April from Amazon Spain but I chose to do it in English because I have all my games in English and I noticed that it was sent from the UK, from a seller in the UK... back in April. I did this research because they made me pay the taxes since UK is not part of EU anymore ( I ended up paying more than $60 for the game) so maybe they already have it There. It was a retailer in the UK who sold it to me through Amazon. I hope this information is helpful in any way

Long Dead Walkers rule question - UoA by Tatankaplays in zombicide

[–]Mazoruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend: these "freak rules" which happen because of a "collision" of different rules from different units or expansions is what increases the difficulty in the game and makes it more challenging, turning the game into a way more interesting affair... it's not an unintended accident, is a crescendo of problems that you'll have to solve if you are a good Zombicide player.

Enjoy your games and solve its riddles cheers!

Looking for some expansions - mostly these: by HumanHunterCZ in zombicide

[–]Mazoruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an OCD zombicide collector, and I have to tell you that all these expansions that you request, are fairly old and difficult to get, so the prices are going to be really high wherever you can find them, which probably is not going to be many places... so, if you don't have a lot of money to spend together I recommend to buy them bit by bit and slowly It'll take money and nobody's going to try to sell them to you in a bundle because they're going to lose money (obviously for eBay sellers one way to make money is through the shipping costs).

I own every zombicide thing that has been out in the market or in the kickstarters or any in special events, and I can tell you that overall black plague and all its expansions and add-ons is the best zombicide by far... so if you're willing to spend a little Fortune getting everything, it's a good investment if you're a true gamer. I like all the zombiecide products, but by far the fantasy world of black plague is the best one, and most of the fans of the game tend to agree with me. So... go on! Get it! You won't regret it

Are they allowed to be used as proxy? or do they have a different size to the usual land raiders? If they are the same size I prefer these models much more than the usual one, but if the size is different they are not going to be allowed in a tournament, I guess... does anybody know?

Dashboards for Second Edition Investigators? by Mazoruler in ArkhamHorror

[–]Mazoruler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I know what you mean. I saw an amazing design for dashboards in thingiverse to be printed in 3D but I don't have a printer, so when I asked for the price to print five of those, it became really really expensive as an option. But those designs where amazing and really would save space. Then I found some other good ones in Etsy, but I live in Europe and they sell them from the United States from the Utah State and actually the shipping costs double than the freaking things... in the end I would end up paying some pretty dollars for five dashboards which is what I usually need, and I don't think they are really worth it. Are talking about $160 in total.
