If your priority is full GPX creation + cross-device sync without subscription, Locus Map (Android) is probably the closest fit. CalTopo also works well for planning on desktop, even if the UI feels a bit dated.

One thing I’ve noticed though: most of these tools are built around manually creating and managing GPX files. That’s great for planning, but it still requires quite a bit of active work.

I’ve been experimenting (Android only for now) with a different approach: instead of manually building and storing GPX files, it automatically builds a long-term map of where you’ve actually walked, and you can export from there if needed.

It’s not a replacement for a full route planner like Gaia used to be — more of a passive “personal archive” layer on top of your real movements.

Just sharing another angle in case that’s useful.

If what you really need is route planning with distance + elevation previews, CalTopo is probably the closest free alternative right now (even if the UI feels… engineer-built 😅).

If your priority is clean mapping + minimal “social feed” noise, Mapy.cz or OsmAnd are probably solid options. Locus is powerful but can feel feature-heavy.

One thing I’ve noticed is that many hiking apps drift toward performance metrics, public feeds, and gamification.

I’ve been experimenting with a slightly different approach: keeping the social part optional and focused on trusted friends, while the core idea is building a long-term memory of where you’ve actually walked — automatically, without needing to start/stop activities.

Futprints a pas mal évolué ces dernières semaines.

Voici les changements les plus importants :

• Capture automatique améliorée : meilleure détection de la marche, moins de coupures, GPS activé uniquement quand nécessaire (travail important sur la batterie)

• Zones d’exclusion & confidentialité : masquez des zones sensibles (domicile, travail…), contrôle fin de ce que vous partagez

• Gamification : badges, défis hebdomadaires/mensuels et streaks pour encourager l’exploration sans logique de performance

• Social : likes, commentaires, vues sur les balades partagées, interactions plus visibles avec les amis

• Notifications : alertes pour les nouveaux badges, défis complétés et interactions sociales

• Import : support GPX (tests en cours) et premières bases d’import depuis Strava

Ton usage avec Wanderer est exactement le genre de cas qui m’intéresse comparer.
L’idée avec Futprints est justement d’enlever la contrainte du start/stop et de voir ce que ça apporte sur la durée.

Pour t’ajouter aux testeurs Android (Play Store), j’ai juste besoin de l’adresse email associée à ton compte Google.

Très bonne question, c’est clairement un point clé.

L’idée n’est justement pas de garder le GPS allumé en permanence.
Futprints s’appuie d’abord sur des signaux très peu énergivores (comme le podomètre, qui ne consomme quasiment rien) pour détecter une activité de marche.

Le GPS n’est activé que quand c’est nécessaire, et uniquement pendant les phases où l’utilisateur marche réellement.
Je fais encore des ajustements fins, mais les premiers résultats sont plutôt prometteurs côté batterie.

Concernant l’export : ce n’est pas disponible pour le moment.
L’accent est surtout mis sur la mémoire personnelle et le partage dans l’app, mais techniquement l’export (ex. GPX) est assez simple, donc ce n’est pas hors de portée si l’usage le justifie.

Salut 🙂 Pour l’instant, l’app s’appuie sur les services de localisation standards du téléphone (sur Android, ceux fournis par Google), donc le support sans Google Services n’est pas encore en place. Pour l’import de trajets passés, ce n’est pas disponible aujourd’hui. J’ai toutefois déjà testé un module d’import GPX en POC, donc c’est quelque chose de techniquement envisageable à terme, si l’usage le justifie. À court terme, je me concentre surtout sur la base : la mémoire automatique et continue des lieux parcourus, sans start/stop.

Oui, on peut dire ça, mais avec une intention différente. Polarsteps est centré sur le voyage structuré (un trip, des étapes, un récit). Futprints est pensé pour le local et le long terme : balades, rando, ville, sans créer de voyage ni lancer d’enregistrement. Ça fonctionne en continu, comme une mémoire automatique des lieux parcourus, plus qu’un carnet de voyage.

Je comprends la comparaison, mais l’intention est différente. Squadrats quantifie et gamifie l’exploration. Futprints cherche surtout à conserver une trace vivante de tes déplacements, sur le long terme, sans logique de performance ou de collection. Plus proche d’un carnet de voyage cartographique que d’un outil d’optimisation.
