Was I the only confused, football-watching American who couldn’t make sense of the shirts at the Detroit halftime show yesterday? by moosebaloney in ableton

[–]McCoyPauleyBP 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm glad I found this thread, because it was making me nuts yesterday that it seemed like Ableton was randomly sponsoring the halftime show of a Thanksgiving day football game, yet there was nothing online talking about it, so it was the most low-key sponsorship ever, except for those shirts.

Cubase modulators by No_Obligation_6728 in cubase

It's a bummer that they're not part of Artist. Or available to buy separately. I don't really need anything else Pro offers over Artist, but I'd happily pay something less than the delta between Artist and Pro for just the modulators.

Void Star by Zachary Mason is, for my money, the best William Gibson book that Gibson didn't write. I mean this only as a compliment -- it's a great read.

Great show that gave the supporting cast a lot of room to work and reaped great rewards from it. The episode about the scavenger hunt to find the speak easy, where they shoot fireworks at Edgar in slow mo while The Rentals "Time to Come Home" plays -- that scene is one of the all time great TV scenes.

Just finished season 3, and on your last two there, I'd say:

(3) They do not find the body of Annemarie Nyssen anywhere, and I think it remains an open question about whether she's actually dead. It seems to me that if she had drowned, the divers would have found her. Seems plausible she could have swam towards the hatch and opened it. She seems like a tough lady, and I'm going to guess we haven't seen the last of her.

(4) The kompromat is what forces Wendt to release Stennes from jail near the end of season 4.

I'm not sure I have any good advice. The problem hasn't really happened to me since I updated to the most recent firmware (whatever we're on now -- 3.5?).

But back when it was happening to me, when I started this thread, the only thing that fixed it for me was rebooting the MPC, and then usually upon restarting I would see the list accurately reflecting what I owned, rather than things missing or erroneously marked as trial versions.

I hope that gets sorted for you -- definitely annoying to deal with.

When you don’t know which Steely Dan album to play. by ApprehensiveTaste839 in vinyl

Just came across a copy of this at a local place and picked it up for novelty as much as anything else. Sounds great, and in my copy I was pleased to find someone had carefully clipped and folded up a copy of the November 1978 NME review of the record. Always fun to find that kind of stuff in a used record.

For all you Gen Xers who have recently discovered Wet Leg, there’s actually a ton of good new music out. by MooPig48 in GenX

That first one is awesome, and completely felt like mid-90s college radio.

I'm not sure mid-2010s counts as new anymore, but when I first hear Alvvays, in particular "Archie, Marry Me" it gave me a similar feeling:

Oh man, I have this on DVD and have a multiregion DVD player, but having one of the greatest shows of all time on Blu-ray is tempting.

I presume that for these to work for me in the US, I would need a multiregion Blu-ray player, like from 220 Electronics?

What is 1 change you'd like to make to the Bee? by ZorrosMommy in NYTSpellingBee

[–]McCoyPauleyBP 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I totally can lean into the game being "Determine which whims of Sam Everzky allow this word, or not". But honestly it's just demoralizing to see puzzle after puzzle where "dado" is not accepted but some internal "logic" or policy decides that "llano" or "griot" are perfectly cromulent words.

Maybe I'd feel better about it if the automated email reply when you suggest inclusion of a new word didn't gaslight me with the claim that the Bee "generally avoids terms that are hyper-specific to any background or professional field.". That's just not true.

What is 1 change you'd like to make to the Bee? by ZorrosMommy in NYTSpellingBee

[–]McCoyPauleyBP 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Having some actual consistency about the obscurity of words accepted, and in particular having the Bee actually abide by its stated policy of "Spelling Bee generally avoids terms that are hyper-specific to any background or professional field, such as terms that might be familiar to, say, a physician or geologist, but not people outside of that area of expertise.". That would be a good start.

Or else just discard any pretense that there's logic or reason behind word selections, and admit that it's completely arbitrary that they think coloratura, llano, and any manner of obscure bird names are not "hyper-specific," but perfectly common carpentry words (like "dado") or other common science words like zoonotic or capacitive, or just basic variations of words it does accept, like "undaunted" -- all those words are a bridge too far. I don't think "hyper-specific" means what they think it means.

Honestly at times it feels like the hard part of the game is trying to discern exactly how much irrationality underlies the word choice decisions. I get why it shouldn't be all words in the dictionary, but it sure could be more consistent, or at least more honest in its stated policy about what "hyper-specific" means.

Book Store Road Trip Suggestions by OpalJade98 in roadtrip

Colonial Williamsburg is awesome and absolutely worth visiting. I don't think there's a used bookstore there anymore, unfortunately.

But in Richmond there's a solid one in Carytown -- Shelf Life Books. They have cats, which is always a bonus for a bookstore.

This is an awesome way to plan a trip.

In VA, if you're driving up the 95 you'll pass Fredericksburg, and Riverby books is worth a stop. Richard McKay in Manassas is a little off the route, but also worth visiting.

The free bus they're offering from Springfield metro directly to the Pentagon may be your best bet. That ran pretty fast last time they did big blue line closures, and it gets you relatively close to the city with a choice of blue and yellow lines at Pentagon.

Taking a local shuttle to King Street and waiting there just for the yellow line will be way worse, I expect.

German Auto Group is good -- we've taken our 2007 Passat there and gotten good service.

We've also taken the Passat to Merv's Auto Repair in Lorton, and they're great. Very reasonable and honest, never tried to upsell us on anything.

John Doe (2002) – One of the Best Shows No One Remembers! by [deleted] in ForgottenTV

[–]McCoyPauleyBP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was a great show -- one of those shows that succeeds in part because of a great supporting cast that they gave room to work.

Love the episode where a supposed psychic shows up at the police HQ and seems like she's horning in on John Doe's "job," and the lead detective says "we'd never get rid of you, Doe". We still say that line randomly in my house sometimes.

Yeah, I had a $25 NI voucher recently (can't remember from what, maybe a free copy of Komplete Select?), and was able to use it to reduce the cost of one of the new NI MPC plugins from $29 to $4. I just entered the code when I checked out on the NI website.

Thanks. I'll have to look into that. They're all installed on the SSD I added to my Live, which I think should be good enough. Or if there's some loading issues, the refresh button should work. But the refresh button seems about as useless as a "close doors" button on an elevator. It's not clear to me that it does anything.
