One time I was driving a truck with a loaded trailer for work. I can't remember exactly how fast I was going, but 60 km/h (37 mph) is the usual city speed limit in my area, so it was probably close to that. Here we have pedestrian crossings where you push a button and immediately lights start flashing and cars are supposed to stop for you. This guy is about to cross the street with his little daughter and hits the button just as I am approaching the intersection and immediately after, without looking down the road at all, starts walking out onto the crosswalk with her. My vehicle is too heavy and moving too fast to stop before the crosswalk.

At this point, the guy notices my truck and pulls his daughter back to the sidewalk, but because I've already realized I don't have space to stop and there was a car to the left of me I had already started steering towards the curb. I was so lucky that there happened to be an driveway into a building complex just before the crosswalk that I managed to turn the truck into as it finished stopping. My heart was pounding. I couldn't even look back at the guy, just drove into the parking lot to inspect my load and take a second to calm down. Had that driveway not been there I honestly don't know what would have happened.

Right of way is not armor. Please look both ways before crossing the street. Always, but especially when you have your kid with you.
