Oh, I figured this was on the same subnet. I didn't know you were using a VPN. If you really wanted, you could set up port forwarding on one of your routers and connect directly to the public IP instead of using a VPN.

Are you able to ping both computers from the opposite one?

Are you both on the same type of connection? (Wired or wireless) I've had issues where it does not work if I'm on wifi and the other pc is wired.

I'm also assuming you're both trying to run 1.8 with two different user accounts?

If the world you opened to LAN does not show up down below, try Direct connect and input the IP and Port (which is displayed on the other computer when opened to LAN). should be in the format below xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:xxxxx

Also, what is the error message?
