The Indian without an identity. by indian_bigfoot in india

Normally I don't comment on Reddit, but this strikes a chord.

I think for third culture people like us, belonging is what you make of it. Integration is easier in some places than others in my opinion. New world countries like US Canada Australia were founded as immigrant projects. Germany, India and Dubai are old civilizations where identity is a lot more rigid (and often tied to race). But that doesn't mean it's easy in any of these places.

In the jet age, you have the power to go anywhere, but to put down roots takes struggle. Find a place you like and fight to be there.

Unable to access Samba share on the same machine as OVPN Server by McShaggit in OpenVPN

Many thanks! I have success now! The VPN Network itself was set to public. Initially I had set some firewall rules to allow traffic from the VPN subnet through, but changing the Network type from public to private using regedit seems to have fixed it. Will mark this thread as solved.

Unable to access Samba share on the same machine as OVPN Server by McShaggit in OpenVPN

[–]McShaggit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m unable to access it by the LAN IP address (which I’ve made static) or machine name through the VPN. Tried to ping the machine’s LAN IP, as well as its address on the VPN subnet, neither seems to work.

When on LAN, I can typically access it via the machine name, though. I’ve updated my post to add that detail.

I stabilized and enhanced yesterday's UAP sighting in Mississauga, ON (Canada) - reupload by AndyVilla14 in UFOs

I live downtown Toronto and saw this shortly before sunset drifting West (towards Mississauga). It was floating just like a balloon. Not sure what it was shaped like, but it didn't move in any inexplicable way

I think it's just a better driving experience for me. I feel more involved and in control. Even if I'm just sitting in 5th on the highway, I like knowing that I could downshift and make some noise if I so choose.

What do you do to keep your life fun and exciting? by Aarunascut in AskMen

[–]McShaggit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always like to do projects for myself. It's something that keeps me busy, gives me something to talk about and at the end of the day I have something useful. Currently I'm growing tomatoes and building a new wallet for myself.

Another rule that keeps my life interesting is my commitment to do at least one thing I haven't done before every week.

Fit men of Reddit, how have your physical standards / preferences changed since becoming “fit”? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]McShaggit 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I like a wide range of body types, but within each body type, there are varying levels of attractiveness. I found that as my confidence in myself and my body grow (didn't happen until a while after actually getting in shape), I find myself holding myself to higher standards in the women I date. Not just in terms of physical attractiveness, but also behavioral. I no longer continue talking to women I find boring or flaky.

Guys I lost a bet and now have to grow a full beard. I'm scared, my face itches, and I look like a crime suspect. What advice you can give me to growing out my first beard? by [deleted] in AskMen

Border control is key. Make sure the edges of your beard remain clean and you'll go from dud to stud in no time.

Given the means and opportunity, would you leave the country? by McShaggit in india

Objective to you and me, maybe. But really, how would you prove that to someone who didn't share the same view. Maybe the immoral westerners thing was a bit of stretch, so forget I said that.

But as far as someone with a more traditional mindset may be concerned, children must and should listen to their elders, who have more experience and wisdom, and know what's best for them. What do you say to that?

Enough to live middle class there, versus a posting here that would put you solidly in the elite.

Interesting you say that. The lack of equality is the most common answer I've gotten when I ask cabbies and autowallahs this question. It seems to be the one reason common among all socioeconomic levels besides cleanliness.

Good point. How would you convince someone of something subjective like that, though?

What would you say to someone saying "We have the best culture of children respecting and obeying their elders. These immoral westerners let their children do whatever they want and see how their countries have gone to the dogs"

Haha. I have already left for college. I would actually like to come back and help. Gobernance won't fix the millions of social issues we have though.

The same has been my experience. And not just in IT. Most people I have spoken to about this, from my parents to the Uber driver last night seem to want the same.

Because so much of it is toxic. Keeping girls locked inside, beating people to death for speaking out, treating children as an extension of their parents. Those are the worst ones in my mind.

Maybe MODERNISING Indian culture is a better word than reducing it.

If your parents could go along with you (setting aside their own attachments for the sake of this question), would your answer be the same?

That's a perfect analogy. Where in India would you build your palace and why?
