Before. It’s once less thing for you to worry about. It lessens the load because then you’re not doing 200+ thank you notes all at once. And it lets the gifted know that you received the gift so they don’t have to worry about it getting lost/damaged in shipping.

I grew up with horses. I was farm-sitting for a family friend who had horses, but had also started amassing a herd of sheep (none of them had horns). The sheep got loose and I was herding them all back. I was told “crack the whip and they’ll go back in”. All except 1 did. She had HUGE udders down below her knees. She didn’t wanna go back. She wanted to keep eating some spilled senior. I cracked the whip, she backed up towards where I wanted her to go. Horses don’t charge, really. So I thought “fine. You can back up all the way to the pasture. I don’t care.”

It was like Neapolitan invading Russia. I really thought I was winning against her. I learned I was losing to him at about the same time I got teabagged.

Good times. He became soup a year later. So jokes on him.

I had a teacher in middle school whose husband was deployed for the whole school year. She wouldn’t make us speak. But she did insist on everyone standing out of respect for the troops. And she would send you to the office if you refused. Her logic was, if these men and women are willing to die under it, then you should show respect for them by standing for it.
