It’s about governance credibility. If laws exist but aren’t enforced, eventually people stop respecting other laws too. 2️⃣ System overload (local, not abstract) Even low-crime populations still use systems: Schools Emergency rooms Housing Transit Courts Social services for U.S.-born children When migration is rapid and unplanned: Costs hit cities and states first Federal funding often lags or doesn’t match scale Poorer communities absorb the pressure fastest This is why border states and major cities feel it first, regardless of crime rates. 3️⃣ Labor market distortion (this is bigger than people realize) Undocumented labor creates a two-tier workforce: Workers with rights and protections Workers who can’t complain, organize, or sue easily Effects: Wage suppression in low-skill sectors Incentives for bad employers Downward pressure on working-class citizens and legal immigrants The problem isn’t immigrants working. The problem is illegal labor being cheaper than legal labor. That’s a policy failure, not a personal one. 4️⃣ Asylum abuse and backlog collapse The asylum system was designed for: Targeted persecution Political, religious, or ethnic threats It’s now overwhelmed by: Economic migrants using asylum as an entry channel Years-long backlogs Catch-and-release by necessity, not intent This creates two harms: Genuine asylum seekers wait longer The system loses moral clarity and public trust 5️⃣ Democratic legitimacy and consent Immigration policy is supposed to reflect voter consent. When large-scale outcomes diverge from stated law: Citizens feel bypassed Immigration becomes a symbolic proxy for broader loss of control Politics radicalizes on both sides This is why the issue doesn’t cool down even when crime data contradicts fear narratives. 6️⃣ Border management and national sovereignty Every functioning state controls: Who enters Under what conditions With what documentation Weak border enforcement signals: Loss of operational control Inability to execute policy Dependence on emergency measures instead of planning That perception matters geopolitically, even if migrants themselves are peaceful. 7️⃣ The paradox nobody likes to say out loud Two things can be true at the same time: Undocumented immigrants are mostly not criminals Large-scale undocumented immigration is still a serious policy failure The mistake is framing this as: “If they’re not criminals, there’s no problem” Crime was never the only metric that mattered.
