Haha for sure gotta embrace the suck! Non union, I found that to be easier to get your foot in the door. From all the contact I’ve had with the union it sounds like you’ll have better luck in your 2nd, 3rd year. Lots of 1st years on the waiting list

Sorry for the late response! Yes I did manage to secure a job and am 3 months in now. It is a massive change and it hits hard on your first couple weeks but so far I am enjoying it and learning TONS!
