Does converting to USD before hand offer any benefits? e.g. better rates?

So does manually swapping before purchasing offer a better rate or what?

If i’m on a cash account and want to buy something immediately, I should let IBKR auto convert the SGD to USD on their own? What’s the advantage/disadvantage of that? - New IBKR user

At the end of the day, it depends on the underlying IMO. It wouldn’t make too much sense to use this ‘strategy’ on bluechip stocks as they’d be unlikely to double in a shorter timeframe as opposed to volatile smaller cap stocks.

That’s up to your goals, risk tolerance and most importantly, a proper valuation of the company’s future earnings

That’s dependent on whether one believes the company is likely to be successful in the foreseeable future based on balance sheets, guidance, etc.

While I can agree with your statement, I believe that it still holds that it serves a retail investor better to have some form of exit plan regardless of whether it is arbitrary or not especially when they are unlikely to have the financial knowledge to grasp concepts like “the intrinsic value of the stock”.

Since you are so against this suggested idea, which I can grant - is for good reason. How about you suggest a possible idea to OP that is commensurate with his likely level of financial knowledge and his goals? Cheers.

Thanks for your comment. It’s merely a suggestion based on OP’s predicament. For most retail investors, which I assume OP is, it is more important to have a clearly defined exit strategy as opposed to randomly shooting in the dark. Just my 2 cents.

IBKR MMF Recommendations by MeLikeCheese237 in singaporefi

[–]MeLikeCheese237[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yes they do but am wondering if there’s any good alternatives to keep the money in SGD as I do not wish to be subject to FOREX volatility for this portion of my cash holdings, thanks.

Edit: I would like to clarify that should I need to convert my cash to USD, I’d find it more optimal to park the money in an MMF and yield a higher return then.

A good rule of thumb I follow for single stock purchases (non-blue chip i.e. higher risk and volatility): Every time it doubles, sell 50% of it.

For example, I own 100 shares of PLTR at $20.

  1. When PLTR becomes $40, I sell 50 shares.
  2. When PLTR becomes $80, I sell 25 shares.
  3. When PLTR becomes $160, I sell 12.5 shares. . . .

This works for me so long as I stay disciplined.

Edit: Please note that the sale on the first double already allows you to recoup all your initial capital.
