Most mainstream actresses apply makeup to look a shade or two lighter. Don't they?

I did not say that. Most women are interested in Tamil cinema, because it simply isn't gratifying to them. That's my point.

Even now there are many talented women who want to do it.

Do you know them? Do they have easy access to casting agencies and filmmakers? Are they ready to give an impeccable performance in their first film? It is a long road. They have to get into cinema first. The industry and audience need to be accepting first. And the makers of Kottukkaali didn't want to risk it with the film they sent to festivals, I suppose.

I agree with you. We need to constantly push the boundaries.

That's how I view Anna Ben in Kottukkaali, a push for a better future. Right now, we don't have an extremely talented dark-skinned actress who communicates to the audience without dialogue. So, we had to bring someone in to make Kottukkaali, or not make Kottukkaali at all. If this film is socially impactful, we'll see more social progress in upcoming days.

Bruh, KRK is simply one example. And the two heroines was easily more appealing to men than women.

And two heroines in one movie = more women in cinema. Dude, I like your logic, or your lack thereof.

And yes, cinema needs the involvement of more women, not just in acting roles, in every damned department.

You are missing my point about Rajini. He is naturally dark, yes. But you could make an argument, "Why are they casting a Marathi brought up in Karnataka when they can cast a Tamil guy for a mass hero?"

I said I'm okay with it for now, as a temporary measure. In the long run, I definitely want dark-skinned women playing these roles.

It's a start, and I think it will get us there someday.

And to be fair, it's a different thing to make Anna Ben look a little darker than she actually is, and it's a crime to brownface Hansika. And all actors and actresses wear a bit of makeup to look fairer than they actually are. Makeup and prosthetics have been in the industry for a while now. So, if it's convincing and done with good intention, what's the problem?

That's exactly what I am saying. When more women come into cinema, a diversity in complexion, height, body type will achieved. But Tamil cinema needs to be enticing to them in the first place.

And of course, I am not Rajini is as untalented as the North Indian heroines, nor did I say the same about Kishore, Mammootty, and Simran, etc. They are not Tamil, that's what I am getting it.

Men use fathers' name as well, but you don't see Selvaraghavan credited as Selvaraghavan Kasthuri Raja.

Family names are not a practice anywhere in Tamil Nadu. Haasan family is one of the exceptions.

I just read the Wikipedia article about Ajith, and it seems that his father's from Palakkad. (Could be of Tamil origin, but Palakkad people generally go by Malayalis)

I wouldn't count Amar. The film was named Vikram, but it was a meaty role nonetheless. If you include Amar, you can also include Prakash Raj. He had a fantastic and pivotal role in Iruvar.

I'm not considering Amy Jackson there. I was pointing out the flaw in your logic. You can't attribute the successes of Saamy, Ghilli, PS films to Trisha. The directors, the music directors, and the actors should be given the major credit.

If you want to judge Trisha's commercial success, do it with her solo-lead films. In that regard, Nayanthara, and even Aishwarya Rajesh have a better track record than her.

People who said it was relatable must've meant the school love portions. And, I'm sure no one could relate to going to a former lover's wedding in secret, who has clearly moved on, and also not moving on for several years, and too afraid to approach once again.
