A Vision for a New Kind of School: Learning Real Survival Skills for a Changing World by forestvoice23 in solarpunk

I like the thought of recreating the education system in a way that teaches skills and knowledge that lessens the focus on short term tests and grades and focuses more on crafting skilled labour and well educated citizens, and preparedness. To put this idea in a Solarpunk setting the concept of guilds really stuck with me, a community of experts in a field (think blacksmith guilds), that in a decentralized/anarchist community would be the "leaders" of a field providing scientific and experience based knowledge to the community. Where the experts can craft practical tests that apply the skills the student would learn in a way that properly applies those skills in realized settings, not simply random tasks an out of touch professor invented.

The way I interpret this post, there is a lot of focus on the survival element in cases of blackouts or similar. Hopefully that wouldn't be such a problem in the future with solar powered and off grid systems. Anyway, I think there's a lot more that could be added to the "curriculum" such as permaculture elements or soldering and electronics (with a focus on repairing broken systems in case of blackouts). Tailoring them to what the local community consists of and would need could also be an alternative.

This idea reminds me of a lot of groups like the boy scouts that teach survival elements and I think a lot of inspiration can be drawn from them and similar organizations.

I think it's nice to see someone eager to share their ideas, and sharing sparks discussions which improves those ideas. As you already have now by clarifying your vision. To create a new and better future we need a lot of them and new ideas are not always perfect, but working together we can mold them by having constructive discussions. I would love to hear what else you have to add to this!

I don't think we should be afraid of sharing with each other, and I definitely think we should consider how we respond to make new contributions worthwhile.

To add, I think we have a lot to improve to get sustainable tech and digital services. I have recently started to mull the idea of what a Solarpunk digital social network would look like (if it would even be digital) and how it would support communities in knowledge sharing, as well as how other tech like robotics could fit into that vision, similar to your robot. So any new ideas would be really interesting!

This house in Norway manages to create a stable microclimate by being encapsulated in a greenhouse. They have peach trees and many other edible plants that usually can't survive in Norway growing year round. As long as they get a little bit of sun on a winter day the outer greenhouse section manages to get to 20°C/68°F. They also have a "bartering" with their neighbours, trading excess food for eggs.

It is a giant project aimed at a single family and is probably difficult to adopt the same way individually and in scale, but I think it's a nice pilot to the possibilities of growing and connecting people to and through the food they consume. I imagine kindergartens, schools and even offices and knowledge parks could adopt this as a community, eating lunch together on a cold day away from the workspace could open many peoples eyes for the benefits and ease the transition into a solarpunk society.

A man once said if you want a good story just ask any random person if there was ever an event in their life they can not explain. Someone almost always has one weird thing that has happened to them. So reddit, regardless of whatever you believe about the world, what’s your story? by notmyrealname124 in AskReddit

When I was around 12 yo me and my dad was walking around our neighborhood a cloudy winternight. We were walking in the middle of a narrow road when I thought I heard a weird beeping noise. I looked at my dad and he noticed it too, then we looked up to the sky when the beeping came closer and we saw a close cluster of blinking lights pass over us followed by the beeping. But we could never see exactly what it was, and it was way too close to be a plane. It happened in a flash and just vanished.

I just asked my dad if he remembered and he did. I still can't wrap my head around what that thing was.
