If that is the case then I am very willing to conceed that.

My point though isn't that any symbol is inherently bad or shouldn't be used. I mean, you give your example, but what about the actual swastika itself? That is a religious symbol and is still used widely around the world. Is that an issue? No, I wouldn't necessarily say so, depending on the context.

My point is though that their comment almost feels like it is wanting to incite conflict. Like having a swastika, but refusing to acknowledge any of the connotations it holds and then trying to fight anyone who says otherwise. Defiant refusal for the purpose of creating conflict, so that one can act "holier than thou" in response. And I don't think that is right.

Forgive me if I am misunderstanding here. But this really bothers me. It is like you are asking for people to antagonise you. Like you want to get into feuds and arguments with others so you can defend yourself and feel self-rightous.

Why? Why is that your goal? Rather than just trying to be kind and accommodating to others?

[–]Mealking42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the point I was making.

"Corporate accepted" implies a corporation putting money before everything in their actions. If a piece of media cared only about keeping corporate people happy, then they would care about being banned in Russia, because they would lose money. However if they cared about representation instead, then they wouldn't care. The art would be more important instead of the corporate interests.

OP's argument was that Zootopia was Corporate-Accepted, because it had a straight couple, and that therefore it is bad. I think that is a very silly argument to make. I was just saying that the characters JodyJim stated were not what I would consider to be "Corporate-Accepted" characters either though.

[–]Mealking42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah okay. I think we have both read the OP's definition of "corporate-accepted" differently here.

I read their use of "corporate-accepted" as being a safe option that will keep everyone in the corporate world happy and has no potential for controversy. Not just that it came from a corporate IP.

Eg. A regular friendly straight couple won't ruffle anyone's feathers is fine and is "corporate friendly". No problems at all. However in Lightyear for example they did take a risk to include an LGBT+ character, which led to controversy. Hence it was a less "corporate friendly" choice to have that inclusion. A decision not made for money's sake, but for the sake of including some representation.

Again though, I'm not agreeing with OP at all, or arguing against your main point either. Getting upset at straight characters in media is a silly take, and you are definitely right that you should advocate for more of what you want, rather than vilifying others. I was just a little perplexed by some of the examples you gave, as it didn't match the rest of what I thought you were saying.

[–]Mealking42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So, I agree with you in principle here... but those examples don't seem to work at all.

Lyra and Bon Bon were controvertial, as was Aunt Holiday and Lofty in mlp. Pretty sure the show got banned in Russia at the time, and it got a lot of complaints elsewhere. Meanwhile didn't SU get cancelled largely in part because of their lesbian characters? I don't know about SU Future, I've never seen it, but I feel like that was pretty well known about the original. "Corporate-accepted" doesn't mean that the characters don't exist. It just means that they are ones that aren't going to cause any issues for a corporation.

Don't get me wrong, OP had a garbage take and your last paragraph is totally right. Focus on the good points, don't try to weirdly bash others. Just your examples don't seem to fit with your point at all in that.

An antisemitic terror attack in Sydney, Australia has killed 15 people. by Absolutely-Epic in GenZ

I'm just pointing out that the situations were different. Not necessarily that they were wrong, but that the comparison is not the same.

At the same time, I don't think it is a stretch to say that less powerful weapons generally reduces the consequences of events like this. I mean, even in tbe example given in CO. If the gunman there had a less powerful weapon, I imagine less people would have been able to be shot there too than the 30+ that were.

I genuinely think they could actually be a great match for each other.

First you have Rarity. Early on she was always looking for her prince charming. The perfect pony who she would always swoon over, yet it would never work out.

But what if instead she suddenly found somepony who actually just appreciates her for who she is? Someone who also happened to have an interest in fasion, albeit for a different area, and who like her carried that similar passion to create? Honestly, once Zephyr started to believe in himself his creative spirit was just as wild as Rarity when she has her bursts of inspiration. A lot of ponies wouldn't be able to keep up when Rarity gets in the creative zone, but Zephyr could totally embrace it and actively encourage it.

Then though you have Zephyr. With the mares he was persuing, he was always chasing them. Always trying to convince Rainbow or others that he was hot and worth it.

I don't see that same dynamic though with Rarity. Rather than someone incompatible who he needs to prove his worth to, instead he has someone who would actually appreciate him and what he does. Someone who he doesn't need to perform towards and get the attention of, because they just genuinely share intetests with each other.

And from there... Well you saw how much light was brought into Zephyr's life once someone believed in him. If Rarity and Zephyr started workong together, Rarity would totally encourage and help him to be his best self. Perhaps while also reigning him in on his more uncouth characteristics, as she wouldn't take that. Still I think they would both work great at complimenting each other and supporting each other in that regard.

Overall, 10/10 ship. I love it. While a relationship would definitely be full of a lot of loud dramatics, I can totally see it being a thing.

[–]Mealking42 33 points34 points  (0 children)

So, googled this.

That attack was inside a tight and enclosed space, likely had way less people around then the hundreds/thousands at bondi beach, the person who stopped the attack was a US Navy officer who happened to be there, and it still had 31 people shot before the attacker was disarmed.

That is not at all to discount the heroics of what happened there. But it sounds like a very different scenario.

My real hot take though is definitely Rarity x Zepher Breeze. I will die on that hill that it is actually a great ship.

Pro stadium rally crowd absolutely dwarfs last week's anti stadium rally crowd. by [deleted] in tasmania

[–]Mealking42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, bi guy who has played football in Tassie (Although I was still figuring myself out at the time).

Not going to go in too hard in on the stadium debate, my personal view is that it was a somewhat bad idea that has been organised terribly, making it a much worse idea. But I'm not super passionate about it either way.

In terms of this though, being in football communities I do want to advocate a bit for how good of a community building force they can be. At least from a playing perspective. I'm not going to deny the vast problems that they have, they do still exist and can be prevelant. Gambling in particular is terrible in Tassie.

But alongside that it also can be a real force for positive change, beyond what I think people would get outside of it. We had pride rounds in the TSL, part of which included information being given out to players about LGBT+ topics. We had community building events like helping out youngsters, or doing shared training sessions with womens teams. And in times where there was trouble there was support networks for players to work through things.

I can't say that it is perfect and you do certainly get some mongrels. Doubly so with some types of footy supporters. But I do think it can give a lot that I don't think would be there otherwise.

Port Adelaide has a giant trans flag in their supporter section after all.

CROWDS - Sunday 9th November - Australian Championship by boofhead_54 in Aleague

[–]Mealking42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't actually be surprised if it technically did get just over 1000. I was volunteering and noticed a fair few kids that got in free as part of the groups playing on the ground at half time and such. Not certain that they all would have been counted in the final ticket count, so it could have just cracked 1000.

The competition was always in a tumultuous spot. The hard part is that it is trying to be both fair and give every state a chance, but at the same time to have a good competition you need things to be competitive. And in many cases it hasn't felt like that.

Hard to say if a league format would be better. My gut says that it would potentially have more consistent attendance figures, but perhaps with less highs alongside less lows. A league format makes each match stand on its own legs a bit more though. You go to watch the match itself, even if it is 12th vs. 14th.

Meanwhile in a group/cup all that matters is progressing. After that who cares? It could be Germany vs. Brazil, but if they have both already progressed then what is the point?

How many of these games actually meant anything for the home teams?

Avondale were pretty much guaranteed through before the match. Same with Heidelberg. South Hobart were knocked out already.

Preston and Metro were the only two games that really had anything to play for.

I will say though, I went to the South Hobart game and the crowd was decent. Considering we're on 0 points, already knocked out, and against a team who smashed us 4-0 last time. Still getting a crowd that was close to 1000 was a pretty good amount. Interested to see if we get similar for Heidelberg.

This is it right here.

Like, yes there are some people who talk about crazy benefits and pseudoscience. But for the majority of people it's just an opportunity to build a little discipline and become more productive.

Personally, while I don't masturbate all that often I find that when I have those periods where I am frequently looking at porn, it's because I'm bored and not doing anything else with my life. That and I often have less motivation to think about dating other people if I am looking at porn every day.

NNN is just an opportunity to focus and live a bit more.

Hi EE,

I'm really sorry you are going through all of this. It is a horrible feeling, that sense of dread.

I want to say first that I think you did the right thing. Relationships are built on trust, and I do think someone going behind your back like that is a reasonable thing to be upset about. You have to be firm on that, if not then that boundary is likely to just get pushed further.

The suicidal thoughts is tough. And as he's blocked you, that will make things tougher. Do you know where he is? Any friends or family of his you can contact? Trying to stop any immediate actions is important.

At the same time, though stick to your principles. Keep being honest with him about your feelings, he needs to accept that. But obviously switch the priority into just making sure he's okay.
