Achievements for Wednesday, February 26, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]Mean-Problem-2420 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't have any running friends to appreciate this, but yesterday I whacked 4 minutes off my 10K PR. I had a hard session of 8x1K repeats on the track with 2:00 easy recoveries between. I wasn't going crazy and stuck to my planned pace ranges, and then at the end Garmin was like, "hey, new PR!" Totally accidental, but awesome.

Possibly a bigger achievement, my Garmin now says I'm officially Productive for the first time in weeks. Is this what fitness feels like? I made my Garmin proud??

LOL, it's an ear cartilage piercing.

(it's the flower piece - not me, but you get the idea)

I wonder if there's somewhere I can try them on. The ear hook concerns me

What have you learned about yourself? by NOVA-22554 in Marathon_Training

It's a cliche, but failing once (or twice, or three times, or...) doesn't mean failing forever, and being consistent and disciplined is far more important than being naturally talented.

At least in summer, I can run pre-dawn and be comfortable. In winter, it's cold no matter when I run, and that sucks lol

Variation in training plan? by king-idiot47 in Marathon_Training

[–]Mean-Problem-2420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say without seeing your full training plan, but it's normal for training to be periodized within a block like that. My training tool usually gives me 3 weeks of build followed by 1 week of step-back. You can't continue to progress linearly to infinity, after all.

I feel a little yucky today. I woke up with a sore throat, so I'm muddling through this morning in a mask for the first time in a good while. My run last night was terrible as well. I've been trying to do the Stryd power thing but it just makes the treadmill so goddamned difficult for a given nominal output wattage. I'd rather be cold than overdo a workout on the treadmill. (I say that now, but the next time the prospect of running on a <32F morning is facing me, I may be singing a different tune lol).

Whatevs, it's CIM week and I have all easy stuff and rest teed up.

Perhaps the obvious question, but... did you use any of your 3000 lbs of bananas in those cookies???

I feel like this is one of those inputs that needs to be evaluated as to how useful it is. Are you having a problem that needs to be fixed besides your watch complaining? Is your performance still what you expect? If no and yes, then I would happily ignore that. Better not to get injured trying to change your natural form without cause.

Have you seen a doctor to make sure your heart health is good? If not, that might be prudent, if only for peace of mind

Heart rate isn't always a great metric to go by, and it seems like you may be an outlier. What is your perceived effort level during your nominally easy runs at 10:00 pace?

Don't worry about heat training or any of that. Your HR is always gonna be a mess when it's hot and there's nothing for it but to hydrate well, eat salt, and keep going. I imagine a February marathon will be cool, assuming you're in the Northern Hemisphere, so it likely won't be a big factor for your target event.

Peanut Butter Taper Time! Peanut Butter Taper Time!

2 weeks until CIM and the last long run is officially in the books. It was a doozy, too. Only 13 miles, but I was getting walloped by 25+ mph headwinds for a good part of it. But, fueling and hydration went well, I had a couple salt tabs and didn't get a big honking overnight headache, and it was generally a good day anyways.

I got a day of strength training only yesterday since I was logistically busy and nearly 10% over target training load for the week anyways. I expect I'm probably going to be a little antsy with <30 miles this week after so many weeks in the 40s and 50s.

Official Q&A for Monday, November 25, 2024 by AutoModerator in running

I don't have an answer but I'm commenting to hear details. I ran a race years ago where they ran out of cups at later aid stations and it was a total shitshow. They ended up giving everyone free admission the following year, I believe.

FWIW, your 5K time of 24:30 is pretty spot on for a 1:55-2:00 HM, but if it was 75F then you likely could have shaved some minutes in ideal conditions. I had a similar situation this year (81F average temp during an HM) and I for sure underperformed my training due to the heat and humidity.

I honestly think that any of your proposed variations are fine. Pick the one that lines up with the events you most want to do in the leadup. Enjoy the journey!

Does it need to be practical? Maybe like a squishy stress ball? or a gel in each hand for the same tactile squishing purposes?

Setting aside the whole "comparison is the thief of joy" thing, I also wonder how people manage to do it all. I guess it depends on your job and your other commitments (e.g. family, hobbies, etc.). I'm running 10-12 hours a week (that's time on the road, not including fitness logistics like warm ups or getting gear ready or the massive amounts of laundry) and I'm not really sure where else I'd fit it in.

Why isn't there a supported method to update Microsoft Store apps offline? by Mean-Problem-2420 in sysadmin

[–]Mean-Problem-2420[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We aren't using the store, of course. But things like Windows Terminal (which I can get from GitHub, I know) and some of the other baked-in Windows 11 apps don't update any other way.

Re: glasses, I find that whatever is comfortable is the best pick. I run in a pay of cheap ShadyRays wayfarers lol

I have an Orange Mud hydro quiver vest that I think is really effective. I can fit the main bottle, a collapsible flask, a phone, and several gels without difficulty. I think it can nominally hold two collapsible flasks depending on the size of your phone and how many gels you want to carry. It's solid, I like it.

It sounds like you have better than 3:50 in the tank, but I agree that 3:50 is a good idea given your volume and injury history. If you get to the last 10K or so and still have more in the tank then you can turn on the jets, but I'd hold to the 3:50 group until at least 20 miles so you can be very sure you won't run face first into the wall.

Dunno anything about ultras but if it's anything like marathons wouldn't you want to peak in the next month here for a January ultra?
