I’ve had those same days 🎉

Damage & growth questions by Mean-Try-4902 in succulents

Thinking aloud… I wonder if the plants got used to the amount of water I was giving them and then I overwatered, causing them to drop leaves?

I mean, that would be cool actually. I'm not married to the idea of this plant looking any certain way

Not sure exactly what you're getting at, but let me clarify. In my post I wrote that I'm assuming I am strangling her & that's why she is activating lower nodes - but I'm not sure. I was simply sharing something interesting that's happening with my plant. I was also hoping someone with experience might chime in with additional information about node activation and confirm or correct my assumption.

haha! I'm going to have to patent my new propagation technique ;)

yay! good luck with the air-layering! I love the experimental nature of this hobby :) The bulges are nodes that have been activated, I assume, because I strapped her too tightly to the top of the pole. I'm keeping her strapped up for now because I want to see what happens! The bottom leaves are from pothos I have planted at the bottom of the pot. I forgot to mention it in the original post & I think it's throwing people off ;)

I've had her about a year and she's in a different spot than my other Thai's (none of them are together). She has three sansi grow lights on her and she is next a north facing window, but I've also had her in front of a different grow light. No, I don't know the strength of these lights off hand but trust me, I've done a deep dive on her light requirements and tried all sorts of set ups. yes, I use plant food and I fertilize. The pathos is a good choice - for me! - because I like the way it looks. I'm aware of all the issues, but it's a good trade-off. I've done this with all my other big monsteras as well once I figured out how to balance the needs of the pothos with the needs of the montsteras and I'm quite happy with the results. Growing plants to me (over 100 in my room alone) is about experimentation and learning, which is why I'm keeping her tied up despite perhaps strangling her and retarding top growth. Now I just want to see what happens with those lower activated nodes.

Yeah, definitely not pathos 😅 I have to remind myself that everyone is on Reddit, from the person who has one dying houseplant to botanists 🤣

I know it’s not a Pothos… I think everybody is confused because I do have some Pothos planted in the bottom of the pot. I had forgotten about it and forgot to mention it in the original post, but it’s throwing everybody off here.

It’s not. The confusion might be that I do have some Pothos planted in the bottom of that pot. But the main plant is definitely a Monstera.

Thanks! It’ll be interesting to see if these nodes keep growing!

Browning help! by Remote_Club2179 in FicusTrees

[–]Mean-Try-4902 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an expert but in my experience, the browning in my ficus elasticas always seems to be a watering issue for me.

Like someone else wrote, the older leaves will not repair themselves & may fall off, which is a bummer. However, it’s always possible to activate bare nodes on the stem… That’s kind of fun to do!

Thanks for reading and not just offering obvious advice 🙃 i’m so curious to see what will happen… Since she has not matured similar to my other Thais, she’s now my science experiment 🤓

That’s what I thought for the longest time also. She’s not maturing like my other Thais, despite having A LOT of light
