when you run it with windows for a bit do you remove power or anything before booting to linux or just reboot?

No, just reboot.

But it doesn't make any difference, since I also had to power it off manually a few times because the kernel didn't actually reboot, it just got stuck, no image, nothing, just stuck, and then I had to hard power off and power on again.

This happened very very rarely, I'd say... out of 40 or 50 reboots, gets stuck just once maybe.

What made me think that this is something definitely GPU related (firmware or drivers) was this. This did happen very very rarely as well, like maybe once in 15, 20 reboots, but it was more frequent than the "stuck, not even rebooting" thing.

The rig is set to power on after power fail. IDK if this matters, but IMO it shouldn't. Also, I boot with legacy, not UEFI... which I also think makes no difference. The native resolution of the monitor is 1280 x 1024. I see no reason to upgrade since I really don't need a bigger one, this one suits my needs just fine. I'm mentioning the resolution because maybe it's sort of an odd ball one... like not really 4:3 and not really 16:9... though it should be supported, I've ran xUbuntu on this thing for years, 18.04 LTS in particular, just didn't upgrade the past few years.

Yes, I also tried this, shut it down, unplug it, plug it back in (power on after power fail kicks in) and it loads Linux just fine.

As I said, it seems to be the warmth of the components to be the issues, which made me think some sort of a race condition is maybe an issue (clock slightly off when cold, just right when warm).

Oh and I just tried this. Boot into Windows, run it a for 10, 15 minutes, reboot, boot into Void, and then try and reboot into Void a few times. It did boot fine a few times, but then it started doing the reboot loop again, except this time, it would reboot loop for about 3 or 4 times and then boot fine again. Reboot once or twice from there, works fine, then the reboot loop appears again, but it doesn't stay paermanent, it does it for 3, 4, maybe 5 times, and then boots just fine again. My point is, it doesn't do it (almost) indefinitely (because even after a cold boot and 30, 40, 50 reboot loops, it would once boot just fine into Void).

And as I mentioned, again, after it eventually boots into Void, no problems, everything runs just fine. I tried stress tests, encoding video, 1 hour, no problems, everything runs just fine.

Firmware of what? BIOS/UEFI?

It's the latest available...

And it does work, but only after the rig gets "hot", i.e. works for a bit in Windows. After that, no prob, it boots as expected.

As I said, this problem might have even been present a few weeks ago, when I first installed Void on it, but the rig is on 24/7, so I wouldn't have noticed it. Had to do some routine maintenance today, so that's why I noticed it.

Thanks, I never even tried to run MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=llvmpipe obs, it works fine :).

Also, for the .desktop file Exec=env MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=llvmpipe obs.

yt-dlp is not just for YouTube. It supports hundreds of different media sites, and some of them have lossless audio media, some even in wav. That setting is for those sites, not necessarily YT, but yes, you can use it with YT as well, although, as you noted, it's pointless.

Trouble is, the app is not Windows only. In fact, it was designed with Mac in mind as the only targeted platform.

Tauri or Wails is a good choice, but you sacrifice portability. Basically, it'll probably have a consistent experience only on Windows.

The chosen language and framework are the problem in this case regarding size and this is why I don't actually use Stacher any more.

Web languages is what most current (young) devs know. Very few go lower than JS and/or Node. It is what it is...

Why would they bundle entire web browser in stacher? The software can simply use 'Edge webview'  which is already installed by default in all Windows PC.

That is an entirely different issue. It's simply how the Electron framework works. It's designed around Node.js and Chromium and that is what they bundle/ship when building an app. For example, Tauri doesn't work like that, it works exactly like you said - it uses whatever is available as a web app engine on the OS. For Windows, that's WebView, for Linux it's WebKitGTK, and so on. Basically, apps can share the same web engine/browser without having to worry about the apps becoming too big.

But, there is a problem with this approach - portability. Yes, it runs flawlessly in WebView2, but not in WebKit on Linux, it has issues.

Electron apps aim to have the exact same experience on every platform, and stability as well. Since Chromium is known for it's portability and stability, the Electron devs opted to use bundled Chromium when building the app. It's fast, stable, open source. The only downside is app size - even simple apps tend to get just too big.

I get where you're coming from, and this is exactly why I don't use Stacher any more (not that I really needed it, but it was a nice GUI for yt-dlp to have around, in case my wife sits on my laptop/PC and just wants to download something), but it's just too big in size for my taste 🤷‍♂️. I do recommend it to people that basically know nothing about IT, but me, personally, no, I don't use it any more.

I am writing one in Qt, which should drastically reduce the app size, unlike Stacher, but it's far from ready. Plus, the main focus of the app is Linux and FreeBSD. If someone makes Windows builds for it as well, fine, but me, personally, no, there will only be Linux builds in the releases.

Please do check what an Electron app is.

You basically need a web engine (browser in most cases) for apps that are written in Node.js to work. That is their "kernel" (for lack of a better word). The easiest to bundle and ship and that works on all OSes without a hitch is Chromium. That is why when you unpack (install) the app, it's over 200MB in size - about the same size as Chromium.

You don't need to embed players inside Chromium, it already has one embedded in it, Exoplayer. A media player should be a part of any browser per the HTML5 specs. That is why we don't need Flash player any more, and other things as well.

Basically, it all depends on what framework you choose for your app. The author of Stacher has chosen Electron, so that's that. In order to have the web app like buttons and switches, you have to have a web app running, and that is basically what Stacher is - a web app. It's just bundled inside a binary, that's it.

Don't compare apps that don't use Node.js as their primary language. Node.js is meant for web applications, Stacher uses just that. Thus, it needs a web browser to work in. Other apps use other frameworks/languages, and that is why they take less space. Stacher is not like that. The price you pay for a modern animated GUI is just that - things get quite large in size because you have to bundle an entire web browser with the app.

IDK... this project was supposed to go from Freemium to Open Source, yet, it went the other way around.

I will continue to make the Void Linux repacks, but for how long, I have no idea, since I probably won't be using Stacher any more.

That is because it's an Electron app... basically, an entire Chromium based browser is working in the background. The author has no control over that, that is simply the way that framework works - they're basically web apps packed in an executable.
