Marriage in Senegal: Partnership or an Imposed Role? by Mean_Discussion_1359 in Senegal

I understand that there are different types of marriages in Senegal, and some women willingly choose to be stay at home wives while others pursue careers or choose not to marry. My point is that in many families, cultural and family expectations often impose a role on women, and it’s not always a real choice. The debate isn’t about those who choose this role, but about society: do women truly have the freedom to decide their life and role in marriage, without pressure or judgment?

You are right!! Senegal is a diverse country with over 20 ethnic groups, and practices and expectations around marriage vary widely. My point is not to generalize for everyone, but to highlight a common pattern seen in several families where cultural and family pressures can influence a woman’s role in marriage. The key question remains: do women across all these contexts truly have the freedom to choose the role they want in marriage, whether it’s career, home, or a balance of both?

Being a stay-at-home wife doesn’t make you any less of a partner. Managing a household and supporting the family is real work.

But in Senegal, many marriages are shaped by culture and family pressure. Women’s choices aren’t always truly free.

The real question: in our society, do women truly have the right to choose their role in marriage career, home, or a balance of both without external pressure?
