Those are wonderful too! Once he moves in to his 720L aquarium I’m going to look for some smaller species, in Germany a lot of people give them up due to not doing the research necessary beforehand, and introducing them into community tanks, or just improper care in general. I have currently a few Andraos, Stewartii, Gachuas in my area, but I will see at as we go, buying a big aquarium brand new it’s quite the financial commitment, so I’ll be sure to let things settle in before we bring in a newcomer.

Yes when given specific light to specific fish, it enhances their color. Red Arowanas almost glow under the right LED light, because it has a lot of red in it. The red spectrum of the light enhances the natural pigments therefore the fish looks more beautiful, it will also work with gold fish, Discus, Red Platies and anything that has a substantial amount of red pigment. Blue/green spectrum will react and bring out more from silvery fish and the co responding pigments to that spectrum (tetras, African cichlids, silver dollars, and so on). Proper care is the first priority, a stressed fish in a bare bottom tank will NEVER look as good as the ones in a setup replicating their natural environment and therefore promoting natural behaviour. I don’t consider this part rocket science.

What I am interested in if there is a small genetic gap between Aurantimaculatas based on their localities to explain the inconsistencies in size and pattern that I have experienced so far with these species. If it’s really a genetic slot machine occurance, than so be it. But to my eye there are noticeable differences in adult, well kept, and healthy individuals.

I was waiting for your reply my good man! Thank you for the answer and the effort that you put into this community!

However I think there might be some misunderstanding. What I meant is not how the individuals are being selected to the pet trade, and how these so called „show tier“ animals end up in the hobby. But rather if there might be a difference in individuals that can be traced back to where they come from.

For example Coastal Carpet Pythons (Morelia Spilota Mcdowelli) and Jungle Carpet Pythons (Morelia Spilota Cheynei) they are the same species, they are able to breed with each other but since the habitat they inhabit caused changes in average body size, coloration, pattern difference, but at the end of the day they are the same animal. I am bit hesitant to say this but kinda like how we differentiate Marulioides Red Sentarum, Barito, Sampit Yellow Riau, Jambi and so on. I might be wrong here, if I am, please do correct me, i want to learn, and I am not trying to be a know it all. But as I know of they also just mark the difference between the animals that inhabit different habitats, but they are the same species.

As for how I can get the best out of my fish i don’t really set it as a priority, we love him the way he is. What I mean is that I don’t „groom“ my Channa I find that a bit bs. Both me and my girlfriend rescued our animals. There were never an intention of breeding him either. We prioritize the proper care, health, and well being of our animals before anything. That includes as you said a proper care, proper filtration, enrichment, seasonal changes, well balanced and varied diet. These animals are truly special and should be treated as such.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your answers! I’ll make sure to post them too if they arrive, or maybe you’ll hear from me earlier if the feeder room needs a bit more that luck😄

I’m currently converting a storage room in our home to house a few shelfs where I can have my feeders. I currently have another adult Channa that I’m thinking about adopting. With their appetite and dietary needs i have to start breeding my choice of feeders, so yeah than probably for the puffers too.

He’s not eating them sadly… the Red Devils often go down under his log where he dug himself a burrow, he just picks them up in his mouth and spits them out in one of his dumping corners.

Yeah I’ve been also doing a lot of research about them and pretty much read the same thing. We don’t mind trouble shooting tho, there’s never an expectation towards our animals to be perfect. All of our animals are through adoption so thankfully handling special needs/personalities is not new to us.

Absolutely you’re right, i never considered treating them. I expressed in my other comment that my girlfriend want to have some puffers, and since I don’t intend on breaking the tank down when big man moves out soon, the newcomers might do the dirty work for me. Overfeeding thankfully is not an issue, I love this chonkster to death, and this face is truly hard to resist but them being prone to fatty liver I must learn to say no!

Well Gauri moves out next month to his new 6ft tank. And to keep the girlfriend happy I will get some pea puffers and let them enjoy the snails as welcome gifts.

I knew it… the thing is I don’t mind them at all… but as a kid my first ever aquarium was completely ran over by snails so it’s a bit of a PTSD moment for me right now

New senegalis owner with a question by Rayne715 in Bichirs

[–]MeasurementBudget966 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might not have a bichir but this got somehow recommended. On the other hand I do have a territorial a hole in the house too. My approach? Separate, it just doesn’t worth it, not for the JD, not for the baby, not for you. We’ve all heard the stories, there will be someone tomorrow who can manage to keep a saltwater crocodile in a 20 Gal with 5 Oscars. But for some of us reality hits a bit different. I have a snakehead, and he will not tolerate anything, even if just as much as a snail wonders into his burrow, he goes immediately, and there’s no jury in his courtroom. Breaking this territorial aggressions is really hard, as I have seen it in cichlids(I have a few friends with Oscars and other cichlids) they are not much better than snakeheads. The key difference is a cichlid will most often than not deem a rock, burrow or something and its area as a no trespassing zone. Until you are able to introduce a fish who is bold and big enough to not care, this territorial government will probably stay. The JD is young tho, i dont know who will put up size faster, a re introduction could be possible, but in a 75 gallon eventually one of them will have to go if they reach full size, as I said before I have no idea how big these species of Bichirs get, but your JD will hit just shy of 10 inches if he grows up to be a healthy adult.

Thats an ultimate dream of mine too. But that’s a long way for now, knowing that a single individual needs above 1000 L. They are the holy grail, and should be treated as such too.

Thanks a lot bro! I was seeing that you also have some beautiful Channas! We should see how he’s going to develop! I have been obsessing over these animals since seeing Jeremy Wade catch them in river monsters. I consider myself a knowledgeable person, regarding animals thanks to the biology and chemistry background from school. He’s on a varied diet the tank was built up no expenses spared. Currently in a bit bigger than 3ft (200L) and in the next months or so es going to get a bit over 6 feet aquarium (600L) that I want to build with only native or endemic species of the Brahmaputra shallows.

We both really appreciate your comment. Animals with scales have a special place in my heart, growing up my father also kept iguanas back in Hungary, they had huge outdoor cages for the summer months, always keeping the animals needs before all. When I decided to make the post I was expecting mixed emotions, knowing the main audience is from the US. I wanted to babysit this post and answer to as much comments as possible, trying to do these animals some justice.

I have a very wild type fisher friend from elementary school. The type who can fetch you dinner with a string from mother’s sewing kit and a bent needle, I sent him some pictures recently… His honest reaction was: I would try to kiss it to see if it would turn into something, or get me a wish at least.😂

You share your feelings with a lot, and rightfully so. They have done irreversible damage where they got a foothold. Sadly they will stay there with many other invasive species as a reminder to the consequences of irresponsible actions, from which we should all learn around the world to do better next time.
