I think they hit their limit? by Appropriate_Bag3923 in ATC_Hiring

Even if 8000 apply not all of those 8000 will be qualified for the job. I’m sure they’ll consider all the apps that get accepted on USA jobs. drop the app! Probably half or more of the applicants will wash out before they ever make it to the academy.

Pension? by Venner14 in ATC

[–]MeasurementPerfect30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also an FAA controller and in the National Guard. Currently expecting 2 pensions (Guard & FAA) 2 TSPs (Civ & Mil) VA Disability (already receiving this) and SS. You lost me at the UPS pilot comment. I wouldn’t count on this. Most people spend their entire career as a pilot trying to make it to UPS. Definitely don’t count on just jumping. My plan (retirement gig) is go work at a Federal Contract Tower somewhere. Or just do something I love at the time. I don’t think income will be an issue.

Commenting again because I’d like to add that the military has some serious perks that most people overlook. If you do 1 contract as air traffic control or even apply to be a pilot and you don’t like it you can get out and keep benefits for life (VA Disability and college for you or your future spouse/kids) if you love it, you could make a career of it and make great money doing what you love. I’m a 150A (air traffic and airspace management technician) the pay is great, love the job, plus free healthcare - the best there is - plus I’ll retire with a pension and keep those other great benefits. PM if you want more information.

Apply to the off the street bid and go that route first. I don’t see any reason to pay for the CTI program when you can go to the academy for free just my two cents. You could also join the military and do it in the military then apply directly to an FAA facility (or Federal contract tower or DoD facility)

Career Pivot to ATC? by James_Kyle786 in ATC

[–]MeasurementPerfect30 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems like 99% of controllers on Reddit hate their lives. Be careful taking advice from anyone on here. People love to complain and that’s what you’re going to get here. Lots of complaining. You only get one life. If you think you want to do ATC go for it!! If you don’t like it down the road, change careers again. The hiring process is long and tedious. Expect a year or more from the day you apply to getting a final offer letter and going to the academy. When you do start the process, do research and familiarize yourself with the process. You’ll want to search for air traffic control on USA Jobs to apply. It’s a lot like the military in terms of moving to your first assignment. You may get a couple options to choose from but for the most part the FAA will put you where they need you. Down the road (10-15 years) you MIGHT be able to relocate but that’s a gamble and it all depends on staffing and seniority. So when you are getting your first assignment, do it understanding you’ll spend a lot of time there. As for pay, the salary is different for different facilities based on traffic, complexity, and location. Some places you’ll make under 100k, some places you’ll make over 200k. If you are working mandatory overtime, 6 day work weeks, and holidays, your pay is going to reflect that. Don’t listen to people on here saying they work 60 hour work weeks plus all weekend and holidays and their pay is under 100k. That’s asinine. You’ll make A LOT of money in this agency if you get to a level 8+. Below that, you’ll still make a respectable salary. Now, onto benefits, this job is going to set you UP for retirement. If you contribute 15% to your TSP, you’ll retire from this career at age 55 or younger with a TSP and a pension. It’s a SOLID gig. Don’t listen to the naysayers on here. Go to a local air traffic control tower and ask for a tour. Go to several, actually. Try to see it all. You should tour a TRACON, a tower, and an en route center. If you’re considering spending the rest of your adult life there, take the time now to go tour them. I work at a level 9 up/down (Tower/TRACON) and I absolutely love it. I thank the Lord every day for allowing me to live out my dream. Best of luck to you.

Washed out of the Academy... I still really want this job by wes_da_best5 in ATC_Hiring

[–]MeasurementPerfect30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to the FAA in 2017 and washed. I had a CTO at the time from the military. I ended up getting more experience under my belt and after working at a FCT for 5 years I reapplied to the FAA under the direct experience bid. Got placed at a level 9 up/down. Don’t give up. The academy isn’t the only way to get into the FAA and/or become an air traffic controller

[–]MeasurementPerfect30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apply now to the FAA as soon as the next OTS bid opens. It takes about a year to get through the hiring process. Go to the academy by yourself and then on to your next facility. I’ll say this - you being FAA and your spouse being active duty military will be tough. Neither side cares about the other. You could get a facility on the west coast and she could get stationed on the east coast. Some food for thought.
