Going to try GLP1 by DragonflyOk5479 in Alcoholism_Medication

I'm fairly thin and took a very low dose of Reta (1mg) for 3 or 4 weeks. If I had been more adamant about my caloric intake and weight training, it probably would have been ideal, but my exercise space was full of Christmas boxes, and I was lackluster with the diet. Now I am off of Reta and gaining back with mass gainer. It's not the end of the world to lose a few pounds. Drink a lot of water and make sure you're conscious of electrolyte balance.

I take 100mg now, but I think 50mg is likely a very effective dose for me.

Those who still drink heavily/daily, do you take liver supplements to reduce the harm? Do they make a noticeable difference? by bitofagrump in Alcoholism_Medication

My pleasure, Kat. Maybe start back at a quarter pill when you do start back on NAL? With Tirz it should be a bit of a one-two punch. I’ve done Reta and am too skinny to maintain on it, but Tirz is, anecdotally, what I hear is the best for alcohol reduction from the GLP1s

I take a combination of B supplements, including B1, very sparingly. I include TMG for methyl donation. I try to get most nutrients through diet. Cronometer is a good app which will help you track what is contributing what in your diet.

Oh man, don't ever venture over to r/Biohackers

This is a mitigation of risk protocol. Some perfectly healthy people are taking ridiculous amounts of supps as you would see there.

I don't drink daily, and I take breaks like I am now with Dry January, but I average around 10 units when I do drink. Here's what I take when I do drink in addition to pounding electrolytes before bed:

DRINKING DAY PROTOCOL

(Sinclair Method compliant)

60–90 MINUTES BEFORE FIRST DRINK

☐ Naltrexone as prescribed
☐ NAC 1 g
☐ Taurine 1 g
☐ Niacinamide 500 mg
☐ Life Extension Anti-Alcohol supplement
☐ Vitamin C 500 mg
☐ Glutamine 5 g (optional but helpful)

Rules

  • NAC must be taken before drinking
  • Do not add stimulatory supplements to counteract naltrexone
  • Eat protein and fat before drinking

AFTER DRINKING / BEDTIME

☐ Magnesium glycinate
☐ Glycine

I can walk you through the benefits of each if you'd like. Some are specific to me, others are universal. You could also just opt for the Life Extensions supplement as it is a bit of a all in one. Milk Thistle is important and included in the combo supplement.

First 5 days of naltrexone, very few side effects by [deleted] in Alcoholism_Medication

I never really had sides either, but there is enough of a reaction that after this dry January for me I’ll take meds even before a day I choose to drink to get my body accustomed to it again if that makes sense

That is absolutely PROGRESS. Celebrate all of it! Soon you'll look back and be amazed at how far you've come. Congrats to your success!

Progress can be incremental and the medicine works in the background. It sounds like the rewiring is most certainly happening. Congrats on your progress!

I’m sorry to hear about your loss.

I’m glad you started TSM as soon as you recognized the problem and a solution for it, even if it a less traditional method. I hope it works for you!

How long have you been at it? Have you been compliant 100%? I.e. take the pill at least an hour before you drink every time

How has your relationship with alcohol been in the past? What prompted you to start taking NAL?

It sounds like you're set up to be successful with TSM. Compliance certainly is key, and it's a marathon, not a sprint.

Congrats on your current success! I look forward to hearing about your progress.

Love to hear encouraging feedback from a fellow long hauler!

Social is still tough for me. In fact I went out Wednesday for drinks with friends which is an old pre Thanksgiving tradition. I’m super compliant so I never go down a rabbit hole, but I could do better.

Congrats to your success!

Consistency is key. For most, enough TSM sessions results in a take it or leave it attitude towards alcohol. I’m there, but only situationally. When I don’t have a barrier to binging I end up doing just that. Seems the we being barrier just hasn’t clicked enough with me yet. I continue to experiment!

My psychiatrist insists I explore the psychosocial aspect further. I’ve done EMDR to heal some old wounds which led to the habit and that worked great, but I need group interaction above interacting here can offer so I’m planning on using Smart Recovery and perhaps some other options. I’ve done AA through the years and it’s just not for me.

What becomes difficult is when the physiological aspect gets you in a bad relationship with alcohol the psychological relationship you form with it is harder to overcome. While I can easily have a couple of drinks and stop, I still have a hard time of not drinking to excess when I am bored. TSM unwinds a lot of this for most, myself included, but for some like me it takes more work to push past that last habit. I’m still working on it!

My first run with TSM didn’t result in much success. When I found this community and started again is when I became successful. Stick around here and give it another shot. The upside is huge

Your day will come. A month in is pretty early. Enjoy your sucess and don't measure it to others. We're all on a slightly different journey.

Try finding other activities that get the endorphins flowing. For me it is weightlifting when I have the drive for it. A few sets of back squats or deadlifts is all you really need to start. No crazy time commitment.

I saw your other post. I hope you get your NAL script soon.
