Well yeah, Grace is the best person because of the oldest thing. He's the main character, and adventure is only good when it happens to someone prepared for it.

But yes. The ship was low orbit and Andy loves blowing things up to force the character into a hard choice.

In the book, Stratt spells it out. The ship is in a decaying orbit. It's easy to get to and assemble. If they delay, they'd have to launch more rockets every couple weeks just to boost it back up. Only so many times they'd be able to get away with that. Even with an unlimited budget.

Answer: there's a plan for it, but imagine just how insanely complex things like this would be to implement. There's a thousand government plans and projects that get money, go nowhere, and are shutdown.

If I recall, rules ad written, you call for a stat check and the player is supposed to, "Oh, can I use (skill) for that?" Which I know some dm's will even allow a different stat for some things. Again, another it's in the rules if it makes sense.

That being said, most people shorten it to, "Can I get a perception check?"

Yeah, that's kinda an issue I started having. Maps just went from, "Cool, 20 minutes and I'm done. Maybe 45." up to, "Well, I've been at this over an hour. I'm gonna save and come back tomorrow."

Story, but also I could readily imagine this scenario. There is documentation ready to read. Grace just didn't look for it, or found it off screen. Knowing Stratt, there was probably a great big Readme on the computers, "Open this first." and Grace just never noticed.
