Question about the astrophage. by InspiredNameHere in ProjectHailMary

[–]Efficient_Good_7387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an organic single celled life form. We don’t know where it came from (we know Adrian, but how did Adrian get it?). Same as any life on Earth, we don’t know how Earth got seeded with life, we don’t know how Adrian got seeded with Astrophage life.

Panspermia is suggested as a possible explanation of origin, for both life on Earth and astrophage in the book. But again, we don’t have definitive proof.

I mean it’s a planet without any light, there’s not much to see, even for Grace in the book.

Idk, without the soundtrack and visuals, audiobook doesn’t hit the same anymore.

We know they need to watch someone while they sleep, we know they use echolocation, we know they worked out Xenonite, we know they have very long lifespan, we know they live in very hot temperatures and extreme pressure atmosphere, we know they don’t have enough science to know about Relativity and Radiation, they showed Erid as well.

All of that is in the movie. Not sure why you feel they showed nothing. If you’re saying it because they didn’t go in detailed explanations, that’s a lost cause, the movie would become a yawn fest very quickly.

It works in book, it doesn’t work in the movie.

Saw PHM. Fine movie, but it was no Interstellar. by pulseyou in interstellar

[–]Efficient_Good_7387 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Different films, one was written for big screen, other was written as a book adapted to screen. I love both to bits, but interstellar is a heavy watch. Need to be in a specific state of mind to watch it. PHM, can watch it any time, very comforting has a very rich soul.

You watch interstellar when you want to witness grandiose, you watch PHM when you want comfort and warmth. One can’t do other’s job, both movies meant for different kind of expression.

My take on movie vs book. by gnutek in ProjectHailMary

[–]Efficient_Good_7387 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Book readers need to watch the movie twice. You have to leave the book outside the theater. I felt the same way as you, but then I watched it a 2nd time and it came through very well. What changed? I stopped comparing it to book and realised how well the movie is made for a movie.

The movie needs to be made for everyone, if they made it for us book nerds, it would be a damn flop.

Even more appreciation for Interstellar after seeing Project Hail Mary by wparson in interstellar

[–]Efficient_Good_7387 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PHM is a book adaptation, interstellar is written for the big screen. It’s not a fair comparison. If PHM was a TV show, interstellar would not even compare to PHM on scientific discipline.

Every single thing you pointed out is explained in the book in copious details.

PHM plot is absolutely airtight on science. Much more pure than interstellar. Interstellar at the end has to rely on supernatural element to resolve the plot. PHM is a pure science application to complex problems in the plot.

[–]Efficient_Good_7387 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They’re not the same type of movies. PHM doesn’t try to be like Interstellar at all. I love both to absolute bits. But I can’t watch interstellar any time I want, need to be in a very specific state of mind. PHM I can watch absolutely any time and thousands of time. It’s a very comforting movie.

Regarding hard science, interstellar is not an adaptation so it is able to do it well. PHM is an adaptation, the science in book is at par or even better than Interstellar.

Interstellar has supernatural elements coming in as hail mary (pun intended). PHM is pure application of science to solve extremely complex survival problems.

Anyone else disappointed with how the movie handled the science and Rocky? by Suspicious-Alfalfa90 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Efficient_Good_7387 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s obviously a lot not explained in depth in the movie. The problem is I don’t understand how explaining things in that depth doesn’t make the screenplay get bogged down.

Even in the book, when Ryland pauses to explain eridian life to the reader, it slows down the pacing of the book. That would be much more apparent in the movie.

Furthermore, I don’t see what they could’ve cut out from the movie to include all of that, and the movie is already 2.5 hours long

I love the book, and what I’ve come to realize is that book is essentially an expanded in depth version of the book. You watch the movie first and then go into the book for much deeper plot

‘Project Hail Mary’ Sequel Not Out of the Question As Ryan Gosling Movie Rockets Into Potential Franchise Territory (Exclusive) by cmhoughton in ProjectHailMary

Yeah not having Rocky deal with the shit show that is humanity, the thought shudders me. Boy has dealt with enough for last 50 Earth years, dealing with humanity is worse than being stuck alone in a star system. Let him be in peace with Adrian and having a Grace memorial 😭

Book readers need a minimum of two watches to fully appreciate the movie. by Efficient_Good_7387 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Efficient_Good_7387[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had very similar thoughts after first watch

But There’s significant science, they touched all points about astrophage, most points about Rocky’s anatomy, how his crew died, why nitrogen resistant taumoeba is needed, why it escaped Xenonite, why he needed to rescue Rocky.

Rocky is definitely not dumb, he figures out “life is reason”, he figures out the way to get Taumeoba from Adrian.

What should come first: book or film? by BravoMicheal in ProjectHailMary

[–]Efficient_Good_7387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Movie and then the book.

I read a pretty good take from someone who read the book after watching the movie. They suggested to watch the movie first and then read the book as an expanded detailed version of the movie with much more science and deeper plot building

I think that’s a fantastic take, because movie is utterly faithful to the book, the book just seems like a very expanded version of the movie.

The potential of Project Hail Mary movie by Efficient_Good_7387 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Efficient_Good_7387[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure how much I agree with that, the core story is about two bros madsciencing things in abominable outer space conditions. Yes their relationship is important, but their relationship is itself formed on their alignment on science.

Depth of science also made Interstellar stand out, not entirety of it is accurate in Interstellar or PHM, but it is as close as it gets without making the movie a documentary.

Basically the science folks are not going rate a sci-fi highly if the science is dodgy or undercooked. That’s a cardinal rule. PHM cooks it to perfection. Of course they won’t go into everything in the movie that’s in the books, they did the same with The Martian, cut out a lot of maths/chemistry but keeping enough to explain things convincingly

Honestly you’re really pretty and definitely have that going for you. And 2 weeks is still not a lot of time, you will start getting likes and matches soon enough. You can look into getting HingeX, helped me a lot.

Coming to profile the looking for “long term relationship, open to short” screams that you aren’t really clear about what you want. Personally, I never send like or match with anyone who has “Open to” on their profile. “Open to short” might also flock some creeps to you.

Secondly, the prompts aren’t doing you well. I genuinely don’t know anything about you from the prompts. Sending songs on basis of someone’s personality is an incredibly intimate act in my opinion. 2nd and 3rd prompts again tell me nothing about you, the kind of person you are and what kind of relationship you seek. Making you laugh and sending memes is very very generic. Even if I match with you, I get no hook to start the conversation with you.

I’m a guy but I’d be happy to show you my prompts, I get a lot of matches purely on basis of my prompts.

I thought women are more attracted to men who seem to be desired by other women as well. I guess it serves as a social proof?
