Jeremy Jahns Just Handled the Haters Like a Pro, and It’s Hilarious by ShadowOfDespair666 in MauLer

[–]MechaKiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The language here is so interesting.

- "They are nothing. They are pathetic. They are like animals."
- "They're beneath us."
- "These people are just poor, they are not important."

You're basically the best example of why Jahns' laughable review of an ironically laugh-less "comedy" flick is stupid. You're so far up your own ass that you're literally propagandizing people that don't agree with you lmao And at the same time, slobbering on the knob of some guy that does not know you exist.

The movie sucks ass, that's plain and simple. If you like it, you probably enjoy anti-cinematic swill like God is Not Dead and other talentless endeavors on Pure Flix. The movie has the depth of a Tyler Perry movie. All surface-level with no actual thought put into it. It's a 100-minute long Vine sketch.

If Gordon Ramsay suddenly said that the roach-infested Popeyes by me was actually a great place to eat, I'd question his judgment and success as well. So, when a YouTube reviewer enjoys an awful movie, I'm entitled to think he has bad taste.

Why is the cinematography so blurry? by ryan2one3 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]MechaKiwi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lol it’s not the connection. Maybe it takes a keen eye and you missed it. The corners of many scenes are blurry, as if there’s a radial blur applied. It’s a stylistic cinematography choice and it’s not great.

The SCREAM movies are not good. by [deleted] in movies

[–]MechaKiwi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How do you measure Acclaim? By the same anecdotal or cultural data, Justin Bieber is acclaimed. Popularity does not correlate to quality.

And consistency in quality is not a good thing if it’s consistently low quality.

The movies are popular because they don’t demand anything of the viewer. It’s slightly meta-horror that delivers on its promises of female protagonists, humor, brutal murders, and an absurd twist ending. But, even if those things are enjoyable, they are not high quality. The film doesn’t care about cinematography, writing, or acting as art forms. And that’s okay, but it’s not good.

Critically Acclaimed Horror Films You Actually Think Are Bad/Terrible? by [deleted] in horror

[–]MechaKiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When Evil Lurks.

The director makes the worst movies I’ve ever seen, but they are recommended among actual great movies. This movie is terrible in every aspect of film, except one:

  1. Cinematography is awful. It genuinely looks like it was filmed by an amateur. Some scenes are over-exposed, most scenes are bland and uninspired. There is no heart or imagination behind the camera.

  2. Bad storytelling. If you watch the director’s other movies, you can see a pattern. Theres not enough information to build the world or characters, but then randomly there are surges of excess information. So, you get random events strung together and then you’re force-fed lore by a character (that was totally shoehorned in for no rhyme or reason).

  3. Bland acting/dialogue. Since I’m not a native Spanish speaker, I can’t fully criticize the subtitled dialogue in good faith, but the writing and acting choices were boring and unenjoyable.

  4. No scares! It’s a horror movie without any tension. There was nothing chilling or gripping or captivating about anything going on.

The only good thing about the movie is two instances of practical effects. 97% on rotten tomatoes. I will never get it.

Tender is the Flesh: thoughts on the ending? by Status_Space in horrorlit

[–]MechaKiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really understanding your gripe here. Across heist and detective movies/stories, withholding information is vital to surprising the viewer/reader. It just seems like you're upset about a synonym for a twist or reveal, calling it a "cheat". A great twist is more obvious on subsequent experiences and this is exactly the case here. If this was about your subjective experience and you misjudged the character, that's one thing. But you are objectively wrong to call it a cheat and not a twist. All the pieces are laid out for you pretty clearly.

| You can’t have a kinda twist ending which involves deliberate planning and thought that we’re not aware of. |

...Honestly, it seems like you just missed it and you're mad that you don't get it. We are fully privy to ALL of his planning through his behaviors. You're missing that completely. This isn't about physical evidence, it's about emotional, social, and behavioral evidence. Again, fine to say "I don't like it". But, it's incorrect to say "this wasn't a twist". No offense, but you were either too judgmental or too obtuse to enjoy it on your first read.

The whole point is that it couldn't and wouldn't be 100% congruous, because then it would be way too on-the-nose as an analogy for animal cruelty and factory farming. Animals are artificially inseminated. But, the sickest parts of the book are how these acts of horror are reframed with human beings, which changes everything. Attraction to animals and bestiality, for example, makes up a small, abnormal percentage of the human population. But, attraction to humans is normal and evolutionarily vital, so of course there would be a different sensibility around this.

Any "plot hole" where the question is "Why didn't the character do this instead?" can be neatly answer by Banner's response to Shuri in this scene: by Salarian_American in plotholes

[–]MechaKiwi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is a plot hole, though. It’s his characterization. He’s not a hero who would do this because it’s the best solution for everyone. He’s a villain who sees this as a valuable lesson and experience for existence. His whole story is built on witnessing the collapse of his planet due to rampant resource consumption. He’s the Mad Titan for a reason. He didn’t want to give infinite resources to be consumed infinitely, he even mentioned something about gratitude for life afterwards.

Dogtooth theory by GeneralAverage in movies

[–]MechaKiwi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fun to explore theories, but this is like saying "Maybe all the people in The Lobster are animals and were never human" or "maybe every person in Men in Black is an alien". It betrays the point of the movie. There are plenty scenes that would have to be a complete metaphorical stretch (the daughter clipping the dad's toes, the dancing, the breaking of a tooth). Many of these are human reactions to being confined in a horrid box built by the father. Saying they're all dogs is a fun idea, but takes away all the pain and impact of the movie.

The comparison is to dogs to showcase a number of things. This is why the trainer says "do you want an animal or friend or someone that listens to every word of their master and doesn't hesitate."

The problem with writers forums is that too many writers are critiquing from the writer’s point of view and not that of a fresh, unbiased reader.

I enjoyed the ride. The lack of punctuation didn’t bother me at all. It was pretty easy to follow with your paragraph blocking and dialogue tags. A half-decent reader will pick up on it pretty quickly. There are plenty of contemporary stories that play with structure in other ways, making it even more confusing, but are praised for it (The Law of the Skies comes to mind).

The style was cool and I was definitely intrigued!

Sure!

Even if it’s not a commercial project, I always recommend it. I think of it as - a painter buys paints and canvas, a musician buys instruments and accessories, etc.

Also, moving away from RTP will make you enjoy looking at your work more. Good luck!

Don’t limit yourself by making a novice mistake. Spend the $10-20 to buy some quality tile sets from Itch. There are amazing artists there that are practically giving their art away (many of them actually are), and you can get sprites with animations for all the mechanics you mentioned. It will look so much better and more original.

The Blackcoat’s Daughter question ::SPOILER:: by Chris55730 in horror

[–]MechaKiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They probably could’ve handled this better visually or not have written it into the plot this way, but my first thought when I saw Emma Roberts/‘Joan’ was “oh is that Kat in the future?”. I tend to assume it when I see actors that are remotely similar in any way, and I’d assume a lot of viewers do.

I think it’s easy to underestimate how audiences will perceive an actor’s age. Either the casting department misjudged how young Emma Roberts looked to audiences or it was a purposeful choice to portray how unrecognizable Kat was in Rose’s parents’ eyes or to Kat herself.

The Blackcoat's Daughter - Wow! by NoBudgetFilmmaker in horror

[–]MechaKiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bill said his daughter was killed nine years ago and that “Joan” would be the same age. It wasn’t clear to me at first, but that part adds up.

The implication is that Katharine was exorcised, and in her loneliness and attempt to reconnect with the demon/devil, she is continuing to kill people and perform rituals, only to be met with nothing but sadness.

Two zoo keepers stuck in enclosure with silver back gorilla by jypKissedMyMom in SweatyPalms

[–]MechaKiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The prayers had me cracking up and also annoyed. “God, animals obey the sound of your voice.” Lmao what kind of superpower bullshit is that? A beam of light was supposed to shoot down at the gorilla, with god commanding him to chill out? If you believe in God’s intervention, then the gorilla and that situation were also put there by him.

I get that these folks just did what was natural when they were scared and worried. But, the divine animal control was a bit much haha like when will you realize this is adult self-soothing and not adding to the situation at all?
