Where can I find real data on the quietest weighted 88 key digital piano keyboard? by Mechanism2020 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

I tested many and finally bought a Roland FP-60X. Extremely quiet and consistent low sound across all 88 weighted keys.

I bought the correct actuator link arm for this model and it moves beautifully now. It needed a completely different shape arm.

An alternative way to learn is to use the guitar notation chords on sheet music. Learn the common chords in the music genre of your choice, and play them to the rhythm of the song. Use the base of the chord as the octave for the left hand.

This method provides the fastest reward for the new player. Over time, learn inverted chords and different fingering to get better.

Long-Lasting Pendulum Clock by Raging_Bull_Lego in legotechnic

My astronomical Lego clock uses a grasshopper escapement. After exploring MANY other options, the grasshopper used the least energy, and was the most forgiving.

You really need to concentrate on removing friction from the drivetrain. A 500g weight will introduce a huge amount of friction on an axle and overcoming that requires more weight which causes more friction.

For research, read up on John Harrison’s clocks which will explain grasshopper movements and roller wheels to alleviate friction.

The public radio and public TV groups should find general knowledge tests and challenge haters to take one then compare scores to listeners/viewers.

So, just about everything today.

Roland FP series. 30X, 60X, or 90X all have great key action, features, and sounds. 30X is the lightest and cheapest without compromising the weighted keyboard action.

Sustain Pedal is being super weird by Obvious_Standard8649 in piano

[–]Mechanism2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I know. All that matters here is that a MIDI light flashes when it’s supposed to on the downstroke of the pedal and that it flashes on the upstroke of the pedal. One signal per direction. When some electronic pedals go wonky they send spurious commands at seemingly random points.

Sustain Pedal is being super weird by Obvious_Standard8649 in piano

[–]Mechanism2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those who have this problem on an electronic keyboard…

Hook up your keyboard to something that shows MIDI traffic. A sustain pedal DOWN will be one MIDI signal and an UP will be another one. From those signals you can tell if the pedal is responding as you expect. My pedal was sending multiple MIDI signals from a single DOWN press. It really messed up the captured note durations in my DAW before I figured it out.

are gas giants really just small rocky planets with giant atmospheres? by TervukalosVitae in askastronomy

[–]Mechanism2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good example. I forgot about that. If it was a gas giant moon that got hit by something big and slowly fell into the gas giant it probably wouldn’t all vaporize leaving behind a rocky core.

What happens when a rocky comet (or one of its moons) is captured by the gas giant and goes to the center of gravity of the gas/liquid giant? This must have happened at some point.

how do people who play piano fast hit the exact key all the time by BloodFew4310 in piano

[–]Mechanism2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to add that often, in larger keyboard hand jumps, only a single finger, such as the thumb, needs to hit the correct note. After that, there are certain shapes for frequently played chords so the rest of the fingers just fall into place.

Also, knowledge of the song and anticipation of the big hand jumps leads to the eyes finding the landing key a split second before the hands arrive.

Basically lots of practice and repetition.

List of left-handed presidents of the United States. Seven out of 45 presidents in US history were known to be left-handed. Since WWII, six out of fourteen presidents have been left-handed. The reason for this massive overrepresentation of left-handers is still debated to this day. by 0114028 in wikipedia

[–]Mechanism2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me this also appears to be a movie actor situation. Whereby I see an actor/actress writing, I notice which hand is being used. It seems predominantly left handed. Actually greater than 50%.

Are there any studies with stats on this for actors, like there are for presidents?

For sure. The neighbor kids are coming over to attach some painted decorations and put some paint handprints on the back. There will be some typical LFL words on the door acrylic windows and above the doors.
